99 dodge diesal will not shift past 1 st gear

Truck will only go about 20 mph and the rpm gauge will redline and the transmission will not shift into next gear. I just want to make sure I do not get screwed when I take it to the shop.

Sounds like the speed sensors. there are 2 of them. High and low speed. run about $20 each and are VERY common on dodge's. if you get a code 25 that is the problem.

How do I turn 4wd on?

    • 1 Start your Dodge truck's engine.
    • 2 Turn the electronic transfer case from "2WD" to "4WD Lock" to engage the high range 4WD, if the dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" to "4H." The electronic transfer case is located on the instrument panel and is marked with "2WD," "4WD Lock" and 4WD Low." The lever-equipped transfer case is located to the right of your leg and is marked with "2H," "4H" and "4L."
    • 3 Shift the transmission into "Neutral" while the vehicle is either stopped or rolling at 2 to 3 mph to begin engaging in the low range 4WD. Turn the electronic transfer case to "4WD Low," if the Dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" or "4H" to "4L."
    Tips & Warnings
    • Indicator lights will come on and alert you that your vehicle is in either the high or low range of 4WD.
    • Do not engage in the low range of 4WD drive if the transmission is in gear; you must shift to "Neutral" first.
    • Many Dodge trucks allow you to shift from 2-wheel drive to the high range of 4WD at up to 55 mph--consult your truck's manual to ensure that this is possible. Do not exceed 55 mph while engaged in the high range of 4WD. Do not exceed 25 mph while engaged in the low range of 4WD.
    • Do not engage in 4WD unless you are on slipper or rocky roads.

My truck speedometer stays at 0 until about 20 mph. also it stays in low gear too long. 4x4 auto 318.

The two problems may or may not be related. First go to the vehicle speed sensor on the rear axle to see that the wiring and connection is clean and tight to the sensor. If it is all good there then change the vehicle speed sensor, this should fix the speedometer. The Dodge transmission has it's own speed sensor and if it is affecting the shift, it should be storing a transmission code. Also the wiring harness inside the transmission may be faulty.

Automatic transmission

Transmission will never hold the engine back if it is going through the gears properly. If it gets into high gear, eventually the engine will reach "redline" if you stay into it long enough. ("redline" for any engine is the point at which it cannot run any faster without harming itself.) DO NOT confuse that with proper shift points which should happen just before you reach max torque which happens way before you reach "redline" at which point you are way past the torque peak of the engine, and making no usable torque or horsepower. An example of this is a race engine with a max rpm limit of 10,000rpm.("redline") Depending upon the torque curve (determined by compression, stroke and type of cam grind) you would likely be shifting gears at about 7500 to 8500RPM not at 10,000.
Therefore, your shift points are like climbing a ladder. you get just so high and though there are more steps, you will fall off if you go there. Each time you shift, you are putting the rpms back into the usable power band, till you reach the next step, then start over again. If your trans shifts early the engine will lug and labor. shifting too late and it will quickly reach "redline" and self destruct or go "flat". In a conversion, you need to make sure that the electronics that control shift points are working within the usable torque range.
OR install a manual valve body and shifter and control it like a stick shift car, using your brain as the computer and a tach to tell you where you are.

99 dodge ram that jerks between 40 and 50 mph

Bring it back to the transmission shop and have them test drive it with the scanner to see if the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) needs to be replaced. A worn TPS will case the transmission to have shifting problems, the TPE sends voltage signals to the PCM and will control the transmission shift points and firmness. If the TPS has a flat spot and the voltage is down at the point where the transmission needs to shift, there may be a conflict of shift program and needs to be addressed. Good luck and keep me posted.

Converter locks in and out between 35 and 55 mph

I assume you have checked the transmission fluid. Try changing the fuel filter. You wouldn't believe how often people confuse transmission problems with fuel filter problems. The engine is starving for fuel, and therefore, power, and the transmission does everything it can to try and find it.
