Question about Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

My 1992 pontiac bonneville SSEI wont move correctly in low gear. esp in the overdrive position. if i down shift to low and work my way up it works better or once i get past 20-25mph. reverse worked great though and low end gears and reverse r the same. I took it to a buddies shop and they called around it should be a sensor or wires damaged. i don;t know where they are located and if ic an change them myself. But i wld like to since the cost is insane for a tranny shop. If you can tell me locations and ease of changing the sensors and what it would probably be wld be great! Thank you

Try changing the modulator valve first, it's screwed into the side of the tranny, it's round cylinder in shape and has a vaccum hose going to it, if that doesn't work, then go for a rebuild.

Look down, behind the the air filter box. It is under the shift cable going to the transmission.

96 pontiac grand prix gear shift moves but wont go into gear unless you move the car by hand then it clicks and will shift

Are you saying the automatic transmission will not shift into gear or the shifter won't move into the correct position?

It sounds like you have transmission problems but it could be that your linkage is loose or defective. Not enough information to give you a good starting place.

Why wont me 1992 Pontiac Bonneville kick in gear

not enough details... I'll do my best guess though:
does the shifter move and the transmission not "catch"? If so -- you have either a broken wire leading into the transmission solenoid, bad solenoid in the transmission,. no oil, low oil,. or otherwise if the linkage from the shifter broke or in need of adjustment..
Best regards

I got a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville drove it to store ran fine come home shut it off and now it wont kick in gear can you tell me what might be the problem

it ran fine? the transmission or the shifting worked fine? the engine or the transmission ran fine? - both? which it is?
Sounds like the problem may be the linkage to the transmission -- IF that is, the real problem is that you cannot shift the transmission?

Changed trans filter now it will not shift stays in low gear, fluid is good correct instalation, nothing out of the ordinary

disconnect your positive battery terminal first, then check your car by starting put it into first gear manually shifting up through the gears with your foot on the brake waiting 10 to 15 secs in each gear working your way through from first to park. Then you want to start in first and manually shift gears as your moving to see if they shift up only go in forward gears.
