Question about 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

1992 Mercury Grand Marquis FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT; The gas guage does not function. Where is this sensor located and how do I access it to replace it? I took this car for an inspection sticker, the guy said come back in 2 hours. When I drove away after inspection the gas gauge no longer worked. The guy said he has no idea why. But it was fine before he inspected it.

Dear Emissionwiz, Many thanks for your reply and info. I have rated you "Helpfull!"
But, the gauge was fine until the car inspection guy had it for couple of hours. Is it possible that the gauge is fine and it has just become un-done or unhooked?

Yes I did. Many thanks. I guess curiosity forces me to find the link between the inspection and the gauge disfunction. When you see the replacement part for sale, it showd a one-wire connetor hanging from its tail. Is that the common connector with the fuel pump you are referring to?

The sensor is located inside the gas tank, you can access the sender from the front of the tank, just make sure the tank is less than 1/2 full or gas will gush out when u remove the sender retainner ring on the tank to remove the sender, u will need the car on a lift to do this...

I worked as a Ford dealer tech for 25 years and never saw this happen, but get under the car and check, remember the connector for the guage sender is the same connector the fuel pump uses so if that was the problem most likely the car would not start.

did you read my second comment?

in all the years I worked on these I replaced maybe 4. so no not a common problem, but the new clean clean burning gas we use does contribute to failure, the chemicals they put in it affect the longevity of the sending units.

why do u keep repeating the post, I have read it, u still must perform the same diagnostics, the relation between the test and the problem changes nothing, what could he have done to affect the guage?, I have grave doubts that they are related. remember we do this on our own time for free,(not employed by fixya, (40 years in the field of auto repair) so take my advice and do the connector test at the fuel tank, if that is ok then replace the sender.

I have a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis Ls with a fuel gauge that does not work (gauge may be reversed)??? help please.

The fuel level indicating system is a magnetic type system, which consists of the sending unit located in the fuel tank, an anti-slosh module located on the back of the instrument cluster, and a fuel gauge located in the instrument cluster. The sending unit changes resistance according to the level of fuel in the fuel tank, which varies the current flow through the gauge. The pointer position varies proportionately to the current flow. In this system, the sending unit resistance is low (22 ohms) when the fuel level is low and high( 145 ohms) when the fuel level is high. The pointer of the magnetic gauge remains in position when the ignition is turned to the Off position. On some models, an anti-slosh module is used to dampen out fluctuating fuel signals from the sender. Some vehicles are equipped with a low fuel warning indicator. The anti-slosh module will also actuate the low fuel indicator when the fuel level in the tank reaches 1/16 to 1/8 full.

Do your other gauges/warning indicators work properly with the ignition on? If not, check for power at the fuse panel/fuses.

If they do then partially remove your cluster with connector still installed and check for voltage at cluster connector and gauge. Check continuity of cluster and gauge for ground.

Sometimes the anti-slosh module (if installed) goes bad in the Grand Marquis but not likely.

Sender troubleshooting:
  1. Perform test with resistors as follows:
    1. Disconnect wiring connector at sender unit, then connect resistor between gauge lead and a suitable ground.
    2. Turn ignition switch to On position.
    3. With 145 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Full mark.
    4. With 22 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Empty mark.
  1. Perform test with fuel sender of known quality as follows:
    1. Turn ignition to Off position.
    2. Disconnect wiring connector from sender and connect it to test sender.
    3. Move float rod away from fuel filter against Full stop position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or above the Full mark.
    4. Move float rod toward fuel filter against Empty stop position. Turn ignition switch to Off position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or below the Empty mark. If gauge works properly replace sender, which involves dropping fuel tank.

Gas gage is not working 1987 grand marquis

Fuel level sending unit. I hope it's not, but ya..... it's inside the fuel tank. Also called the float level.

Not an easy task unless you are ready to drop the fuel tank at home.

Some had a small access hole under the back seat so you could get to it easier, but it's not that easy to get the back seat out, and harder to get it back in.

Hope this helps.

How to replace fuel gauge on 1984 Grand Marquis

Are you sure its not the fuel sending unit and not the fuel gauge itself.Because the sending unit controls the fuel gauge level and if the float gets stuck then the fuel gauge will not work.

Gas guage not working on 1987 grand marquis

No the fuel gauge is mechanical, it could be an issue with the sender unit or the wiring between the sender unit and the gauge

Gas guage not working

The most common reason for this type of problem is the sending unit located inside the gas tank.

On this year and model the sending unit can be removed without dropping the gas tank. to access it you will need to locate it at rear of the tank. remove the lock ring and remove it.

1993 Grand Marquis fuel gauge problem

Not sure what your asking but the fuel gage sending unit is in the gas tank. Most problems with fuel gages that read incorrectly are there. It may need to be replaced.

My gas guage doesn't work. It shows a few bars at the top and bottom. Could this be a fuse problem?

Fuel guage problems almost always are a ground issue...
as far as I am aware , there is no fuse specificly for the fuel sending unit in any Ford line of vehicles.

My 1992 grandmarquis isnt ging any fuel to the engine

I had a the problem and I replaced the inertia switch which is located in the trunk. This is the switch that will flip if your car gets hit in the rear end and it cuts off the fuel flow to the motor to prevent an explosion.
