Question about 2003 Mini Cooper

Poewr sterring and electrical problems

I have a similar problem with a stiff power steering, but it is also giving me all kinds of strange electrical issues. It all started whit the AC turning off by itself while driving. Then the signal lights work, but the inside indicator doesn’t. The power lock with my remote stopped working as well. It locks the doors, but it unlocks right back by itself. The dashboard lights are also acting on. These issues come and go. I could be driving all day with the problems and then I start the car the next day and everything works. It feels like a hunted car.

Most likely the issue is with the electrical, particularly wiring. You may check on the wiring harness if there are exposed wires or terminals that may have gone loose. This happened to me, in my case starting the car was the issue, it will work at times. A good place to start if you plan in doing this yourself are the electrical harness under the hood. Your AC, signal lights and dashboard wirings are located at close proximity with each other. They may be sharing the same terminal for the ground or the harness itself may be loose. Only way to check is to physically inspect it and to use a tester to check continuity and voltage. As for your power steering it may be related if your power steering is electric and not the hydraulic. Otherwise, it may be isolated and for this you need to check on leaks, tire pressure or fluid contaminants.

My steering works when I start off but it gets real stiff as I speed up

Hi Roger:
- Very strange, and

Strange because steering normally gets easier as you go faster.

I'd get it up on a lift or jack stands and check all of the ball joints and pivot points, power steering drive belt and fluid level.

Has ANY work been done on it recently, and in particular, on the power steering?

Any other history would help.

When driving the EPS light on the dash board come on and the sterring become stiff. when i turn off the ignition and start the engine again the EPS light come on and off normally and the every thing return...

EPS stands for Electric Power Steering. Hyundais have electric power steering instead of belt driven pumps. But they still require power steering fluid, Check the fluid to see if it is low. That would trigger the signal to come on.

After replacing power steering pump, steering still feels hard. rack and pinion was replaced less than 3k miles. car has been sitting for several months.

i've had a similar issue with a 99 M3. really stiff steering. i thought i was getting old and weak.

I was chasing another problem when i discovered a solution for my stiff steering issue.

Most of these vehicles have a valve that helps control steering pump fluid flow at various speeds.

i.e at higher speed you want stiffer steering. at low speeds easier steering. however, how does the pump known your going faster?

Note: all bmw steering hoses leak...

As your car ages, so do electrical contacts, especially in harser climates.

I used eletrical contact cleaner and di-electric grease to solve an intermittemt ASC problem.

This also cleared up the steering issue.

get some electrical contact cleaner and some di-electric grease. pop your hood and clean as many electrical connections as you can and apply a little di-electric grease after the contact cleaner drys.
even do the dme.

Note: I have replaced the power steering rack twice before i discovered this fix. You may also fix some other issues in the meantime.

electrical contacts may be the biggest problem source for most newer vehocles since they tie everything together.

What kind power sterring to use on a caddy deville 4.6 litre

Power stearing cap gives you the number/grade of oil to use. Better yet go to Auto parts store and read the fluid container lables. one will probably say for GM vehicles

It has power steering. Why does it steer so hard?

Do you hear noises while turning the wheel at low speeds or stationary? If you hear a whining noise check the power steering fluid level. A low fluid level would make a whining noise as well as cause stiff steering. If you hear a squealing noise check the power steering belt tension. A slipping belt would cause stiff steering also. If you hear no abnormal noises check to make sure the power steering belt is there. If all of the above check out ok you may have a bad power steering pump, steering gear or a blockage in a pressure line.

My power steering is not working, i changed the pump, and pulley, also changed the fluid and bleed it in. what else could it be? Also, when steering the wheel inside the cab, i hear a little ticking coming...

I had a similar problem with the steering being stiff almost to the point of seizing. They found that the universal joint(or knuckle) between the steering column and rack and pinion was seized. I hope this helps.

I have researched this issue and it seems the problem may be the power steering pump, it seems it causes these kinds of loose of power assist and the resulting stiff/hard steering effort, the 1st thing to do is have the fluid checked in the pump, is it full? does it look discolored? if it is low you have a leak, if it is discolored or smells burnt then you may have steering rack issues as well, on occasion a flush of the fluid will help, many shops will flush the power steering for you at a reasonable cost compared to parts like the steering rack and pinion and the steering pump.
