There are three wires on the alternator. one is a feedback voltage that switches on the alternator via the internal voltage regulator..there is an 18 gauge fusible link that runs from that wire to the battery to sense the voltage. they are fuses, but look like a regular piece of wire, they blow quite often, get the wiring diagram for the vehicle

I bought a brand new starter and new battery in the last 7 days. When I try to start my car, the engine does not engage, instead, all I get is a loud rapid clicking noise. Does anyone know what it mig

I guess I will start by saying we can only guess because we are not there in person.
My first question would be, where is the noise coming from ?
If it is the starter, you could have missing teeth on the flywheel and nothing for the starter to engage.
Depending on the make model and year, if you have a starter relay other than the one on the starter it could be faulty.
As long as you have 12 volts and a couple hundred amps of power at the starter post, and a good ground, the starter should turn. If the neutral safety switch was faulty you would get nothing when you turn the key. And the alternator would not come into play until after the engine starts.
Can you turn the engine by hand ?
Can you jump the starter with a screwdriver or jumper wire and make it turn ?

Why won't new alternator charge battery when car is running

Many cars have a voltage regulator that is integral to the alternator. Check to be sure it is properly connected. One year later afternoon the day before the Turkey was to be cooked I replaced the Alternator. I drove 200 hundred miles and had the car die at the gate to my destination. I failed to properly connect the Voltage Regulator on the Alternator. Look in that direction for a bad wire, fuse, connector.

CHECK ALTERNATOR OUT PUT SHOULD BE 13.5 VOLTS TO 14.5 VOLTS.IF NOT ALTERNATOR IS NOT CHARGING BATTERY.CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE AND CHECK ALTERNATOR POSITIVE FEED WIRE AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRES.IF ALL IS GOOD ALTERNATOR NEED TESTING AND REPLACED.IF ALTERNATOR GOOD BATTERY CABLES COULD BE OLD CAUSING POOR GROUND AND HIGH RESISTANCE IN POSITIVE CIRCUIT. STARTER SOLENOID FAULTY IF NOT BEEN REPLACED.

When I turn the key in the ignition the car won't start and the starter makes no sound. It has a new battery and a new alternator. What I can I do besides set it on fire?

You may have a bad starter, the best to determine this is by testing for power at the starter, also the battery is new but is it still good and fully charged, you may what to make sure battery is fully charged first, then test starter with a test light, there are two connection at starter, one is a battery cable this has power at all times then the small wire, this should have power when key is held in the crank postion, have someone hold the key while you test. if theres power at both connections then starter is bad, heres a diagram to show you where to test starter.5eb28af.jpg

Replaced starter relay, as it met the rules for

You need to have the alternator tested as well. If you have a good battery but a bad alternator, it could take a while for the battery to discharge enough to cause there not to be enough power to engage the starter.

Also check your ground, not just at the battery, but at the engine block as well. Hope this helps/.
