No oil in the oil filter

While doing an oil change i removed the oil filter and noticed there was no oil in the oil filter. didnt even look dirty just wondering why

Why my bad motor in escape didnt have oil cooler and replacement did?


Could be a mod after market, or a change duiring production and you go the other style engine. Not a bad thing to have, will keep the engine running much cooler, prolong oil and engine life, and a bit better gas mileage.

Dear Expert, just bought a Pajero petrol (A) 1997 2.5L two months ago, use semi sythetic engine oil + motor-up oil treatment, noted that after 3,000km, it turn very black & dirty, why???


The oil turning black and dirty means that besides doing its primary job (engine lubrication), your oil is doing very well at its second job, which is removing contaminants, exhaust by-products, and even microscopic pieces of metal (caused through normal engine wear and tear) from your engine, and bringing them around to be deposited in your oil filter and oil pan. In short- it is cleaning your engine.
It is possible that the previous owner of your Pajero did not change their oil often enough, and your fresh oil change removed allot of build-up.
Remember- this is all stuff that was in your engine, and is not anymore! Keep changing your oil and filter every 3,000 miles (4500 km) or so,, and over time you will see the used oil getting cleaner as it does the same for your engine!

This is normal and is good. There is a one way valve built in the oil filter so when the engine is shut off this valve will shut and keep the oil in the passages so when the engine is started oil will be pumped in the engine quicker and oil preassure will be built up quicker.

Got an oil change, now there's a bad leak. it's on the rite side under the engine.looks like it's coming from a bolt.using 2 quarts of oil a day.


Sounds like they cross threaded oil drain plug or its stripped. Take it back to where you had oil change, see if they can verify & own up to it.

I have a 2001 Durango 4.7 with 131,000 miles,oil has always been changed every 7,000 with Mobil 1 synthetic. I have been reading all the nightmares about sludge with these engines, but never had a problem...


Recently I have seen a larger than normal number of oil filters that are empty when removed for service. I have not cut any open yet to verify why, but I suspect that the internal drain-back valve used in many are defective and are not allowing oil to enter the filter. I would also suspect that the filter bypass valve in the filter pad could be sticking except that when the new filter is installed every one has filled normally. When doing a filter change it is always best to at least partially pre-fill the filter with oil. After the engine is running you can put your hand on the filter and if it is getting warm, the oil is going through it.
There isn't much you can do about what happened...likely you have a slight bit more wear on the bearings, as dirty oil has been re-circulating through the engine while that filter was on there, but in using a good oil, I doubt if it can even be measured. I would consider using an additive such as Lucas synthetic, or even marvel oil to help clean out the valve lifters and help with the tapping on start-up.
Oil pressure would not suffer because instead of going through the filter it is bypassing around it with no pressure drop...it's just not going through the filter.

My daughter tells me that the mechanic at a garage in town tells her that the OIL FILTER doesn't have to be changed.Is that correct???


If it has an oil filter that can be removed, then it has to be changed at least every other oil change. Better repace with every oil change. Some modern cars as some european sedans (bmw and mercedes) as well as some fancy corvettes and probably vipers, do not have external oil filters and do not even have a dipstick. On this cars, the oil is special to be changed every 30 top 50 thousand miles, but even on this vehicles, there is an internal oil filter that also has to be replaced.
