Question about 2000 Jaguar S-Type

Failsafe engine mode is coming on i have a 2000 4.0 jag cant figure it out i have checked for loose wires theirs nothing wrong with the car its running fine but worried about going into limp mode

Fail safe mode is something the vehicle computor will go into when there is a problem with the vehicle it allows u to get off the highway or road safely you need to take vehicle to repair shop or your dealer which ever u prefer
Failsafe engine mode on a 2000 jaguar s type is caused by a stopped up throttle body. Jaguar says not to clean the throttle body since it has a protective coating to help keep deposits from accumulating. You can clean the throttle body as long as you use ONLY throttle body cleaner that states it is safe to use with a protective coating. The butterfly valve in the throttle body will actually stick not allowing air to flow into the manifold causing failsafe engine mode to kick in reducing the amount of power your engine will produce. To solve the issue just clean out your throttle body, it will cost you around $5 dollars and take 1 hour of your time.

Potential Answer
Limp mode initiates when the enginbe computer(s) note a problem that can cause serious damage to the engine or electricsl components. The car engages limp mode and will not go into higher gers as a protective measure.
My mercedes SLK230 did the same thing; the dealer tested the car and told me there was nothing that could be done and that I should sell the car ASAP. I took the car home, opened up the computer under the passenger side floor board and found that the male-female connectors were not completely seated (some days the car drove well and other times I would have this problem, which almost resulted in several accidents on the highway). I pushed in the computer connectors and the car has been great ever since (2 years now). Therefore, check your computgers to see if you have a loos connection(s).

its a computer fault iam sure ask your local jag garage to run a diagnostic ,i have a 94 XJ4.0 lt and its never a problem but i do only use it on a sunday as i simply cannot afford the petrol prices here in spain unless fixya pay me per question then i could afford a 7.4 litre american motor

Solution for the message "engine fail safe mode" in explorer 2005


I have hearing a lot of this lately with Fords. Most of the time this dash board light comes on due to problems with the Throttle Body (TB)not just your coolant,etc.. If it is sticking,dirty,causing misfires,etc. then this can cause an engine fail safe mode.You might first try putting in some injector cleaner and a higher grade of gas.Many people I know who have had this problem have had to have their TB cleaned and/or replaced. This is something Ford dealerships now about,but hasn't been made a recall or anything.There are service bulletins though.Mainly keeping cleaner in your gas and performing ritual tune-ups/oil changes may be the only thing you can do.Hope this helps

My care keeps saying failsafe engine mode and it keeps cutting off? Do you by any chance know what's wrong?


Many things can cause this message, get it to a good jarage and have the fault codes read - this will tell you what is going on. Don't panic - it could just be a faulty sensor .. these cars are very prone to this. Try to avoid using a jag main dealer for the code readings as they are expensive and tend to ''overcompensate'' for repairs! Most good independant garages have the ability to read the fault codes.

Failsafe engine mode


The failsafe mode can appear following numerous faults being detected - some faults can be momentary and register but not cause a problem. These are normally reset by just turning ignition off/on. get the fault code memory read at a garage and this may give you a clue as to a possible problem developing. Failsafe mode will give you reduced engine performance but will allow you to drive for normally some distance. If a serious problem developes your car message centre will tell you to shut off the engine or it will shut it down.

Failsafe engine mode light comes on, codes


Just a quick mention - for about a month my XK8 low coolant light came on intermittently. This week with no notice while driving normally I got Stability Control Fail and FailSafe Engine Mode and wtih great difficulty got the car back to where I started from (less than a mile). Two days later (when got time) and after a bit of research, I tried it again - same problem and a very unhappy engine. I then disconnected the battery for 15 minutes (probably more) to clear the engine codes as well as check all the wiring and vacuum stuff I could under the hood (at a Jaguar master mechanic's recommendation). No problems found but the car would start and immediately stall with the air intake hose disconnected from the intake butterfly. After I reconnected the air intake hose, she started and purred like normal. The problem is the BATTERY... It is low - I've known it for a LONG time BUT it always started right up and never skipped a beat. I intend to replace it tonight but fully expect that's the issue. I've had the car 6 years (it's a 98) and had NO problems except a dead taillight asembly.

Enigine fail safe mode


Sounds to me like the mass airflow meter, cutting in and out. When faulty it can completely shut a car off, and also ingauge limp mode. I hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.

Engine Failsafe mode


Probably, your ZP HP-series transmission has failed. You didn't mention your car's mileage but failure is common from 60K - 120K miles. The "lifetime" synthetic fluid accumulates metal dust beyond the filter and magnet's ability to capture it, and sudden and catastrophoic failure occurs. Find a good independent shop (check your local Jag club) and they'll replace the transmission for around $6,000. The dealers charge twice that.

The other possibility is failure of the secondary cam chain tensioners. If you hear a clattering sound when you start the car, turn it off immediately and have the car transported to a good Jag shop. They can replace the plastic tensioners with metal ones for around $3,000. (Rough guess.) Make sure they do the same with the plastic primary tensioners and chain guides, and replace the chains. Failure to take this step after you hear the first symptoms will result in engine failure.

Also replace the plastic water pump and thermostat with alloy units.

Sorry for this bad news. I own a 2001 XJR and it is a fabulous car. It's still a Jaguar, though, and you're going to have to put a few thousand into it. Since these cars are selling for next to nothing on the used market ($12,000 for 80,000 miles), I consider preventive maintenance of $5,000 or so to be part of the investment in a world-class sedan.

Failed safe engine mode 1999 V8 S Type


I've got a 2000 that did the same thing. Get this, it was caused by a defective trunk seal that let water in my trunk and got my wiring wet. Could'nt even shut off the car, only way to kill it was to pull the positve battery cable, negative won't kill it. After all dried out, and jag dealer reset my failsafe mode all good....... until now i have a .500 ma draw on power while sitting unused, brand new batteries down in 1 week??
