Question about 1991 Pontiac Firebird

2002 Pontiac Firebird doesn't reverse/gears not shifting well

I have an automatic 3.8L V6 Firebird with 108,000 miles and the reverse gear does not work at all. One day I tried to back out of a parking space and it wouldn't shift into reverse. It hasn't been able to reverse since. I also noticed at the same time that the gears have a difficult time shifting while I'm driving. They will eventually shift if I let the gas up a little and push it back down at the peak of the gear, but they don't work like before. I'm not about to go out and replace the transmission (mostly because I'm a broke college student) but I don't know enough about cars to know what else could possibly be wrong. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1999 Pontiac Firebird manual transmission. Reverse pops out of gear.

Check the linkage first. They put plastic grommets on the arms. They disintegrate. After that, it is internal. They also put plastic tabs on the shift forks. Could be a bad gear.

Why 2002 firebird won't move in reverse. shifts into ot but will not move.

Manual transmission............ check the shifter adjustment, or the reverse gear s broken.

Automatic transmission.......... check the shifter adjustment and sensor adjustments if you have a scan tool. Or the reverse clutch pack has worn out. These did have problems with slippage, if it had a slipping problem it is probably gone now.

its not a sure fire fix but my 93 trans am did the same thing it had all forard driving gears and acted fine but no reverse so i with no better solution changed out the trans fluid and filter and just kept driving it but before i whent anywhere while the car was running i cycled it through the gears everytime b4 i left and about 2 weeks later i started it up and reverse was back i think it was due to a metal shaving that got lodged in one of the valve bodies a trans fluid flush is also a good idea i hope ur as lucky as i was

86 firebird wont shift! drove it yesterday, today it was stuck in park. i rocked the car back and forth and that freed it... but now it will only shift from overdrive to reverse. no park or lower...

You may need to drop the transmission pan and take a look at the parking paw mechanism. You might want to disconnect the shifter linkage and see if it will shift into the other gears.

91 GTA 350 Cannot go in reverse; when I shift, the car 'jumps'

Sounds to me like the valve body is sticking causing the low/reverse clutch pack to stick. Might try a fluid/filter change. If all else fails, at least the 700r4 is a cheap/easy transmission to rebuild.

97 firbird automatic not shifting properly when accelerating some

You could change the fluid and add a good conditioner like lucas, but even if it works better, you are only buying time. Unit is likely beginning to wear out.

Parking gear

The cable that connects from the shifter to the brake pedal is either broken, or you are not pushing the brake when you are trying to shift.
