Question about Hyundai Motor 2003 Elantra

2003 Hyundai Elantra It sounds like the backfiring noise that has been happening might be coming from the back. A few responses so far said it may be a sensor,my fuel pump,or even the transmission...Hopefully my mechanic will look at this tomorrow for me...I went after work today but he was too booked...I had the transmission fluid checked today and its full. This backfiring sound has been going on for the last 10 weeks or so...If it was the tranmission don't you think it would have gone by now. The noise doesn't happen all the time though. Most of the time that it happens is when I am driving locally and not on the highway. The car has 81,000 miles on it...My mechanic was first saying to put in a new fuel pump which I don't think is the problem no do I think its the transmission...no check engine lights come on so can it be a senser. My father thnks maybe a valve or hose is loose. Please advise. This was updated from before. Greg thanks for answering my previous question

It only happens when I am stopped at a light or a stop sign at times... When I start to build up speed to again I will the backfire noise every so oftern. When I am on the highways I do not get it at all. In the morning when I am driving to work I am not getting the noise until I am almosr at work...

Going home from work I tend to get it while driving home go figure...

I have had the noise for a few months now. I doubt it can be my tranmission since I checked the tranmission today and the fluids are good. If it was that it would have gone already. Yesterday when I first started the car in the morning. It didn't want to give gas but then was fine.

It it possible something is clogged???

not that much. It doesn't stall at all... Once in a while when I start the car and go in drive and give it gas it will put 4 times then go....

Do you think its the transmission?

Does the car appear or feel like it is cutting out momentarily when this happens?

Notice it more when you rev engine & let off the gas quick? How about when you let off gas to slow down, does it happen then?

I had the same problem and started with the basics. Checked air filter. Checked spark plugs. Seem to look fine. Ran fuel injection cleaner for 5 days then engine light came on. Used my OBD tool and found that cylinder #3 was not firing. Changed spark plus $8. It was the spark plugs. Is running fine. FYI The fuel filter is located in the tank under the rear seat. It is a lot of work to replace it.

Doesn't sound like transmission, but lets wait & see what your mechanic finds, as it's hard to tell with description your giving , but I know your telling all you can. If your doubtful at all with his diagnosis, all you have to do is say , you'll need time to think about it, and perhaps get back to us, or stop elsewhere for a second opinion.
Good Luck, let us know.

2003 Hyundai Elantra can the car fail inspection if your check engine light came on a few times in the last month and 1/2. The light didn't stay on long though Will spark plugs making a backfiring noise...

Until you verify which codes occured, your guess is as good as mine. Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on.
You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE and perhaps eventually fix the problem.

I am still having problems with my 2003 Hyundai Elantra making backfiring noises. I just had a fuel injection cleaning that cost nearly $90 performed and the problem is still there. Some of you have said...

Backfiring is caused by timing , bent or burnt valves. If the timing belt was replaced but not put on correctly, you will have this problem. The marks MUST be aligned correctly.

Is the check engine light on? If it is, take the car to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve any fault code(s) that are stored in the car's computer. Most parts stores offer this service at no charge. The fault code(s) will help identify problems/potential problems. That's better than guessing. Hope this helps you and best wishes.

2003 Hyundai Elantra It sounds the backfiring

At first blush, sounds like the knock sensor making the car misfire. Other possibilities are:
  • fouled spark plug; might not notice it at idle but would misfire at higher speeds; check the plugs as well as the valve cover gasket for oil seepage
  • if you've noticed a sulphur smelling exhaust or excessive heat from the exhaust, it could be the catalytic converter (more likely if there is high mileage on the car). Another symptom would be very bad performance and poor gas mileage.
