Question about 2001 Subaru Legacy

Knock sensor error code. Have reset a few times, but error code returns within a day or so. What could this be or just a bad sensor?

Do a good tune up on it, if it is running the engine can miss fire ( you will not hear or feel it ) try it first

the following information courtesy of OBD-CODES.com P0328 Knock Sensor Circuit High Input OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description Knock Sensor 1 Circuit High Input (Bank 1 or Single Sensor) What does that mean? Knock sensors are used to detect engine pre-detonation (engine knock or ping). The knock sensor (KS) is usually a two wire sensor. A 5 volt reference is supplied to the sensor and there is a signal return from the knock sensor to the PCM (powertrain control module). The sensor signal wire informs the PCM when a knock occurs and in what degree of severity. The PCM will retard the spark timing to avoid pre-detonation. Most PCMs have the ability to learn spark knock trends in the engine during normal operation. A P0328 code is a generic DTC, thus it applies to all makes of vehicles, and refers to a high output voltage of the knock sensor. In many cases, this means the voltage is above 4.5V but that specific value depends on the specific make and model of vehicle. This code refers to the sensor on bank #1. Symptoms Symptoms of a P0328 DTC may include: MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination Audible knocking from the engine compartment Pinging from engine under acceleration Loss of power Irregular RPM Causes Potential causes of a P0328 code include: Knock sensor connector is damaged Knock sensor circuit is open or shorted to ground Knock sensor circuit is shorted to voltage Knock sensor has failed Loose knock sensor Electrical interference in circuit Low fuel pressure Incorrect fuel octane Mechanical engine problem Failed/faulty PCM Possible Solutions If you can hear engine knock (detonation), first fix the source of the mechanical problem and retest. Ensure the correct octane fuel was used (some engines require premium fuel, check the owners manual). Aside from that, for this code, most likely the problem will lie either with the knock sensor itself or the wiring & connectors going from the sensor to the PCM. Realisitcally, for the DIY vehicle owner, the best next steps are to measure the resistance between the two knock sensor wire terminals where they go into the PCM. Also, check the voltage of the same terminals. Compare those numbers to the manufacturer's specifications. Also, check all wiring and connectors leading from the knock sensor back to the PCM. In addition, you should also check the resistance using a Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM) of the knock sensor itself, compare it to the vehicle manufacturers specification. If the knock sensor resistance value is out of spec, then it needs to be replaced. I have an 02 jeep liberty stalls after warm and is throwing multiple knock sensor codes p0325, p0330 help


P0325, P0330 are both knock sensor codes that are detected by your ECU. Considering that you are showing both codes indicates that your model trim level is either "Limited" or "Renegade" that will have a knock sensor for 2 banks (V6). Knock sensor errors will change the timing of your engine ignition and can lead to a drop in performance or worse, lead to engine stalling in order to save other components of your engine.
The common solution to remove knock sensor codes is to have the sensors replaced by an authorized mechanic; sometimes shorted electrical leads to the sensors are also a cause for the codes. Replacing the knock sensors will remove the prompting of P0325, P0330 and expect to find another fault as engine stalling is not always present with knock sensor error codes.

Knock sensors are used to detect engine pre-detonation (engine knock or ping). The knock sensor (KS) is usually a two wire sensor. A 5 volt reference is supplied to the sensor and there is a signal return from the knock sensor to the PCM (powertrain control module). The sensor signal wire informs the PCM when a knock occurs and in what degree of severity. The PCM will ****** the spark timing to avoid pre-detonation. Most PCMs have the ability to learn spark knock trends in the engine during normal operation.

If the PCM determines that the knock is out of the ordinary or that the noise level is abnormally high, P0326 may set. If the PCM senses that the knock is severe and cannot be eliminated by retarding the spark timing, P0326 may set. Keep in mind that knock sensors cannot distinguish between a knock from pre-detonation or one from engine problems.

If an engine knock can be heard, fix the source of the mechanical problem first then retest. Make sure the proper octane of fuel was used in the engine. Using lower octane fuel than what is specified can cause a ping or pre-detonation and may cause P0326.
Unplug the knock sensor and check for water or corrosion in the connector. If the knock sensor has a seal, verify there is no coolant from the engine block fouling the sensor. Repair as necessary.
Turn ignition to run position with engine off. Ensure that 5 Volts are present at the KS connector. If there is, check for proper resistance between KS terminal and engine ground. You will need a vehicle specification for this. If resistance is out of specification, replace the knock sensor. If resistance is normal, plug KS back in and idle the engine. Using a scan tool in datastream, observe KS value. Does it indicate a knock is present at idle? If so, replace the knock sensor. If the knock sensor shows no knock at idle, then tap on the engine block while observing the knock signal. If it doesn't show a signal that corresponds with the taps, replace the knock sensor. If it does, verify the knock sensor wiring isn't routed next to ignition wires. If there was no 5 volts present at the knock sensor connector while unplugged with KOEO (Key on engine off) then go back to the PCM connector. Turn ignition off and clip the knock sensor 5 volt reference wire in a location that is easy to repair (Or remove the wire from the PCM connector). With KOEO, check for 5 volts on the PCM side of the clipped wire. If 5 volts isn't present, suspect a bad PCM. If 5 volts IS present, repair short in 5 volt reference circuit.
Since the reference circuit is a shared circuit, you will need to check all engine sensors that are fed a 5 volt reference. Unplug each sensor one at a time until the reference voltage returns. When it returns the last sensor you plugged in is the shorted sensor. If no sensors are shorted, check the wiring harness for short to voltage on reference circuit.

Why does my car throw the code P0100 and P0325? I have a 1995 Nissan 240sx. and it has a random misfire once in a while.

Often a single issue can trigger multiple diagnostics codes, especially if the circuits are closely related.

Code P0100 = Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit malfunction

The computer has detected an issue with the MAF sensor.

- Verify the MAF sensor wiring is connected and wiring is in good condition
- Unplug and reconnect the MAF harness
- Check that voltage to the MAF sensor is within factory spec


Code P0325 = Knock Sensor # 1 Circuit malfunction

A knock sensor tells the engine computer when one or more of your engine's cylinders are "knocking", that is, exploding the air/fuel mixture in a way that delivers less power and can be damaging to the engine if prolonged. The computer uses this information to tune the engine so that it doesn't knock. If your knock sensor wasn't operating properly, so that it was always indicating a knock, the engine computer's response may have been to change the ignition timing on your engine. Knock sensors generally bolt into or thread into the engine block.

- Check condition of the knock sensor wiring.
- Test the 'Ohms' reading of your Knock Sensor (undo the connector and measure the pins) to ensure it is within spec (ask Nissan for this measurement). If out of spec, replace the knock sensor.

P0332 - Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Low Input (Bank 2)

This sensor signals the engine-control computer when detonation is detected, momentarily retarding ignition timing until detonation ceases.

Most computer-controlled systems use knock sensors to ****** timing when the engine is experiencing pinging or knocking.


Obviously, a faulty knock sensor produces problems that appear to be ignition-system-related. If the knock sensor system does not provide an engine detonation signal to the PCM (powertrain control module), the engine detonates, especially on acceleration.
  • The first step in diagnosing the knock sensor and knock sensor module is to check all the wires and connections in the system for loose connections, corroded terminals, and damage.
  • With the ignition switch on, be sure that 12 volts are being supplied through the fuse to the knock sensor module.
  • A quick check of a knock sensor is to watch the ignition's timing while the engine is running and the engine block is tapped with a hammer.
    • The noise should cause a change in timing.
  • The knock sensor can also be checked by tapping near the sensor and watching for an AC pulse on a DMM or lab scope.

Knock sensor circuit problem


Well, you have another issue besides a knock sensor problem. A knock sensor code WILL NOT illuminate the check engine light. Check for other codes stored in the ECU. I have seen oxygen sensor issues cause knock sensor issues due to inaccurate fuel delivery resulting in engine ping at all times (causing the ECU to think that the knock sensor is bad because it's reporting ping at all times) - but also had codes for one or more O2 sensors.
