If you look at the label on the fan shroud both the A/C equipped and non AC equipped applications are printed on the same label. Just look closely and I believe one is shown with a dotted line. The change of path occurs around the belt tensioner.
Not entirely sure that a shorter belt was needed, the routing of the belt on the passengers side of the motor takes up some of the slack.
There are 5 different engines available for the '87 F-150.
Go to this site and choose the Ford F150 and appropriate engine.

Belt removal instructions (and routing information) may be found on a sticker under the hood. I have posted a picture of the diagram below if these instructions have faded. The routing on the left is without the AC.
