2003 Hyundai Elantra It sounds the backfiring

2003 Hyundai Elantra It sounds like the backfiring noise that has been happening might be coming from the back. A few responses so far said it may be a sensor,my fuel pump,or even the transmission...Hopefully my mechanic will look at this tomorrow for me...I went after work today but he was too booked...I had the transmission fluid checked today and its full. This backfiring sound has been going on for the last 10 weeks or so...If it was the tranmission don't you think it would have gone by now. The noise doesn't happen all the time though. Most of the time that it happens is when I am driving locally and not on the highway. Please advise

At first blush, sounds like the knock sensor making the car misfire. Other possibilities are:

  • fouled spark plug; might not notice it at idle but would misfire at higher speeds; check the plugs as well as the valve cover gasket for oil seepage
  • if you've noticed a sulphur smelling exhaust or excessive heat from the exhaust, it could be the catalytic converter (more likely if there is high mileage on the car). Another symptom would be very bad performance and poor gas mileage.

It could be something simple....but have the hub and bearings checked.....does the steering wheel vibrate when you drive? If so defiantly have those checked.....Sometimes it could be a nail in tire or a stone(that is the simple part)

This sounds like a bad pulley, maybe bearings in the waterpump or alternator, you will need to remove belt and spin each pulley to locate and also check for a loose pulley.

There is a 'boink' noise from the rear of my 2007 Elantra

Take it back to the repair shop and tell them to fix it (that it didn't do it before the repair).

2003 Hyundai Elantra can the car fail inspection if your check engine light came on a few times in the last month and 1/2. The light didn't stay on long though Will spark plugs making a backfiring noise...

Until you verify which codes occured, your guess is as good as mine. Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on.
You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE and perhaps eventually fix the problem.

If a timing belt is not put on properly and its causing your car to make backfiring noises can it cause problems to your car?

not usually if it's running and backfiring. A timing belt on certain cars when it breaks can cause major damage because the valves stop and the pistons continue to move up and down can hit the valves bending the valves and even shattering the piston. You need to align the timing marks on the crankshaft and the camshaft for it to run properly

Backfiring is caused by timing , bent or burnt valves. If the timing belt was replaced but not put on correctly, you will have this problem. The marks MUST be aligned correctly.

Is the check engine light on? If it is, take the car to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve any fault code(s) that are stored in the car's computer. Most parts stores offer this service at no charge. The fault code(s) will help identify problems/potential problems. That's better than guessing. Hope this helps you and best wishes.

Doesn't sound like transmission, but lets wait & see what your mechanic finds, as it's hard to tell with description your giving , but I know your telling all you can. If your doubtful at all with his diagnosis, all you have to do is say , you'll need time to think about it, and perhaps get back to us, or stop elsewhere for a second opinion.
Good Luck, let us know.
