Question about 1990 Volkswagen Cabriolet

1 Answer

My 1989 VW Cabriolet has trouble going into second gear. Sometimes, I can't get it into second at all. Feels like there's something blocking the gear, no matter how hard I try to push it into second, it won't go. Then other times, it "slams" into second, and makes a grinding sound...almost like maybe the synchros are going out? I don't have any problems with other gears...just second gear. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My first thought is bent shifter forks or linkage is off. Start with the linkage as it is easier. Shifter forks are internal tranny components.

sounds like the linkage is misaligned, vw makes an alignment tool just 4 this problem. mine used to go into the wrong gear, and then I lost reverse I got so pissed off I slammed the shifter to the left and that fixed it, but I cant really recommend that you do this. Best of luck though!

You can take 2 small screw drivers and pry out on both sides of the switch to remove, unplug the connector and reinstall the new one.

1989 vw cabriolet fuel pump test is there a way

yes. Depending on where your fuel filter is located, you can disconnect the fuel line at the fuel filter and then try to crank the car over. If it spits fuel out of the disconnected line your pump is working, if not then it's bad. Another way to tell, but not always is when you car is started you hear a high pitched whining sound from the tanks. This is usually (again, not always) an indication of a fuel pump about to fail.

How hard is it to change a thermostat in a 1989 vw cabriolet?

Not a difficult job at all, just a tad-bit messy. Will need to follow the hose from the radiator to find the mounting location of the thermostat on the engine block.

Check out your gear linkage and gearbox mounting. If that is fine then It could be the clutch. Sorry for the bad news.

Not sure what the other wires go to, maybe the air bag, regardless all instruments are working on the '89.
