On your vehicle, with the V belt, the belt adjustment should be made by loosening the tension bolt(s) and the pivot bolt of the alternator. The alternator, itself, should pivot to get the new belt on, and then you pivot it back to tension the belt. Recheck the tension after a few hundred miles, as the belt will stretch. I have used a medium size crow bar wedged between the alternator and some place on the block to put tension the belt. Just be real careful where you place the bar so as not to break anything off the engine. And it's a good idea to cushion the alternator from the bar with a rag. It's a two handed thing. Hold the bar in tension and snug up the bolts.

Should be an adjustment on alternator to loosen and move alternator for slack to get belt off and on.

Look for the black one that runs on the smooth/back side of the belt with a 15mm silver bolt head in the middle

Need to replace alternator on 2004 sorento Where is the tensioner and what way do i release it to get belt off thx

take a broom handle or similar stick, wedge it under the tension pully, it will be the small pully near the top of the belt sequence, you pry the pully down to take the spring tension away so you can then slide the belt off with ease. If you are going to replace the alt, it makes a lot of sense and will save you head aches if you also do the belt and the tension pulley. Your local parts store will have all three parts.

How do i replace the serpentine belt that goes tothe alt. ?

You will need a breaker bar to release the tensioner. A breaker bar is a long ratchet that doesn't ratchet. The breaker bar size for your car is 1/2".

You will see a square hole on the tensioner and that is where the breaker bar goes. Put the breaker bar in there and pull on it until it gives you enough slack to pull the belt off. Make sure to pull the right way to release the tension. IF it wont release the tension don't yank on it try going the other way, It will help to have two people to do this job. You only need to pull it off one pully then slowly let the tensioner go back.

To put the new belt on make sure you run the new belt the exact same way as the old. Again you will need to release the tension from the tensioner and slip the belt over the last pulley.

How do i loosing up the tension belt's to replace the water pump??

serpentine belt drive or conventional serpentine uses a tensioner pully on the side if it it has a 3/8 or 1/2 drive opening for a socket put it in a pullaway from the direction its tensioning and slip it off. old school belts loosen the alternator adjustment and back the alt looseng nut by slide and the 14mm under it that brackets it down.

How do i release the tension on serpentine belt for replacement on 2000 chev tracker 2.0 eng suzuki engine

There should be a square1/2 inch hole most likely on the bar that leads to the tension pully, where you can put a 1/2 inch breakover bar or ratchet to depress the tension bar/spring, alowing the removal and replacement of the belt.

How do I release the belt tension pully to replace serpentine belt

You can run down to your local auto parts store and buy a serp belt tool. Or you can take a 3/8 drive ratchet, locate the 3/8 square hole in your tensioner and put the ratchet in the hole. For more leverage I put a deep socket over the ratchet handle and put a long 3/8 extention in the deep socket. This will provide ample leverage and will save buying more tools you do not need. Simply move the tensioner to the direction that takes pressure off of the belt.

Serpentine belt for 1998 mercury tracer

Hey there MSM,
  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator. The routing diagram is on one of the radiator supports.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done
