First place to look is the thermostat. When a thermostat fails, it prevents additional coolant from entering through the reservoir. Coolant backing up into the reservoir is another symptom of a bad thermostat. The reason you don't experience overheating when you drive is sufficient coolant is being pumped through the system by the waterpump.

Possible thermostat faulty, Thermostat automatic, stays shut, till water reaches correct temp, if it goes faulty, (ie) does not open after reaching running temp, water will not circulate, so engine overheats

Temp gauge possibly not working

Locate the temp sensor in the coolant system and take a good look at it. Make sure it is firmly fixed in place and the wires to it are clean and not corroded. If its ok, check the connectors to the dash for damage.

Temp gauge goes way up to the danger zone, but not quite overheating, if I don't have the A/C on. Checked coolant level, it is fine. When driving it rises, when idling in goes to normal.

Possible wiring from sensor ( need to verify it is overheating, with Thermal Gun or probe) if it is overheating, check Fan operation and possible radiator restriction ?

1996 ford taurus is overheating and smoking both ends...what could cause this?

Make sure your cooling fan is working properly. Let engine idle and when the temp goes up make sure it kicks in. You could also try changing your thermostat. This controls the amount of coolant going through your engine. If it is not opening it is not allowing coolant to cool your engine causing it to overheat

There is a cluster of hoses off of the top radiator hose

Sounds like air is in the system, probally because it's overheating. Check the water pump. The impellor is plastic and breaks causing 0 circulation.
