Question about 1997 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport; No brake lights; both sides and top mounted middle stop light. All fuses seem to be ok. Found reference online to a switch on the brake pedal, but don't know how to tell whether or not it's good. What else should we consider?

Brake lights don't work

check all electrical fuses first. the brake switch that is mounted on top of brake pedal arm underdash, may be bad or out of adjustment. this switch sends power to rear stop lights when putting on the brake. if bad there will be no power going to back lights. after fixing switch check the power to stop lights. if still no power check wires and the bulbs.

Where is the fuse for the break lights located in the 1997 cherokee

If its the 2.5TD it is located in the interior kick panel fuse panel. Location is cavity No 25,15amp,light blue in colour. It controls ABS,climate controls, cooling fan and brake switch. If it is the fuse for the high mounted brake light, the fuse is in the engine compartment in the electrical power distribution centre. Cavity No15. 15amp,blue in colour.

theres 2 fuse boxes on the grand cherokee, 1 below steering colum ant the kick panel and 1 in the engine compartment beside the battery. check all fuses and if they are ok check the brake light switch above the brake pedel.

Dim Dashboard Lights

I think this indicates that you have an exterior light out. Check the tail lights, brake lights and the three bulbs that are mounted at the top of the rear window.

My headlights won't work on my 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I replaced the switch under the dash, checked the lamps and fuses and they appear to be OK... what am I missing?

with a test light or voltage meter you would check fuses - if good check power at switch and thru switch when turned on - then relay for headlights - then power at lights - you can use battery post as ground first - then use body metal as ground - this will tell you if the problem is on the positive side or negative/ground side

1989 Jeep Cherokee - Electrical Problem - horn, brake lights, blinkers, radio/cd...

I think I have found the problem. When I wiggle the ignition switch the turn signals and radio go on and off so I feel the issue is in the ignition switch. From what I understand the actual electronics for the switch are at the base of the sterring column behind the lower dash panel and is connected by a rod that may need adjusting.
