That wire carries the current to charge the battery. If it breaks, the battery voltage will drop and the car will not run correctly, if at all. It may start and run for a few seconds then cut off.
no, the plug wires snap onto the plugs which are in deep recesses in the valve cover on the DOHC, which is the SL2. On this old car you may just want to replace the plug wires at the same time unless you are sure they are less than 5 years old. get some good wires, not generics, that are made for the car.
Now you have a real reason to use the camera in your cell phone. go to a car lot where you see as S type saturn 91-99 they all have the same engine block, just two different heads. take a picture of the plug wires, go back and hook your car up the same way. in the future just do one plug wire at a time.

fuel, oxygen, and spark. Check all of these. Is it getting air. Is your filter clean. Are you getting spark. if not check your plugs wires and coil. finaly check your fuel. Are you getting enough fuel. Replace the filter, make sure you are getting enough psi's before the injectors. also make sure the fuel pump is working.
You will probably need to put your car on a computer scanner.
