Question about 2002 Ford F150 Regular Cab

3 Answers

I have a 2003 Ford F150 Supercrew (4.6L, 8-cylinder)

I have a 2003 Ford F150 Supercrew with just over 70,000 miles that suddenly was 5 quarts low on oil. The oil light never came on to warn me the oil pressure was low and there were never any signs of burning or leaking oil. About two to three weeks ago I started occasionally hearing a strange rattling noise when I started the engine that lasted less than a second or two. Then a couple of days ago the truck started running extremely raggedly while idling. It sounded like a diesel engine. I changed the air filter, which had a lot of leaves and plant debris in it. It was better, but still bad. Then I checked the oil and it needed five quarts! So now the truck is running much better than it was, but still pretty ragged and has a tendency to die or almost die when idling. I have never had any problems with it before and we put all but 60 miles on it.

Does not sound right, the engine oil capacity for your engine is 5.7 liters with the oil filter. To add 5 quarts, your would have been running with no oil for who knows how long. As for your engine running the way it is, with no engine oil means a complete over hall. The ruff idle is caused by worn cam shaft and the crank shaft bearing must be worn to, and the possibility of spinning a bearing is high. Sorry for the bad news but with the information you gave me, this is the what i can come up with.
Good luck and hope there is a better out come.

Might have a defective oil sensor as far as not letting you know you were out of oil! Also check the igniter units on all cylinders those can go out independently of others!! Causing rough idle and rough running !! swampratt200 !! AAAEEE!!!!!!

The oil light is called a idiot light when it comes on its to late the damage is done, and as long as there is enought oil in the engine to keep pressure but not enough to keep the rings and bearings from wipeing out. if you pullthe pan you will find the bearings shot, you might be able to replace the rods and mains and it mat do better but the cylinders gtes its oil form piston rod splash, so the rings may be shot

I need to remove my number 6 ignition coil but

Hello. Here is the order of things for your truck. The engine firing order for either 4.6L or 5.4L V8 is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Cylinders are numbered, 1-2-3-4 on the passenger side bank of cylinders beginning at the front of the engine. Cylinders are numbered, 5-6-7-8 on the driver side bank again, beginning from the front of the engine to the back.
Soooooooo the number 6 is the second one from the front of the engine on the drivers side.

do not use any fuel additives at all. and only use 87 octane fuel nothing higher. 4.6 and 5.4 ford engines do have a pinging sound especially with a load. but it is normal
