Starter staying engaged and running with key off

This is usually due to one of two things:

  1. The solenoid spring in the starter is broken, not retracting the starter gear when the key is released.
  2. The starter gear is binding in the flywheel (flex plate) and not releasing after releasing the key.

When testing starter out of truck works fine, put starter in truck and under load starter stays engaged, rip

Either the solenoid is getting power when it should not be, or the starter drive is not aligned with the flywheel.

1999 Nissan Maxima Auromatic Transmission 4th gear electronic overdrive intermittantly slips.

could be a solenoid
low oil
worn overdrive friction discs

you can source a used transmission from a wrecker
and drop that in

from the pictures i cant tell if its overdrive is under an external plate at the end of the gearbox
and repaired with an overdrive kit

2001 f350 v10 automatic transmission will not engage gears

Hi Brent,

No gears at all is not a good sign. About the only things that can cause all the gears to go out at the same time is either the transmission has a severe fluid leak and there is no fluid left to engage the clutches or you have something broken like an input shaft.

If your truck is a 4X4 make sure there is not something silly like the transfer case being in neutral.

Otherwise, check your fluid level. If it is really low, then you need to find out why. If it is not low, look at the color of the fluid and smell the fluid. Good fluid should be pink or red. Bad fluid will be dark brown and will have a burnt smell to it.

If the fluid looks and smells bad, then it is probably time for a transmission overhaul.

Hello. I am very worried about my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. In the mornings when I go out or stay parked too long in one place, sometimes it takes much gear changes. I accelerating much more until then...

The first thing you should do is check you fluids and if you haven't had a fluid change in several years you should change the fluid and transmission filter.

But in the meantime, turn your overdrive off and see if you notice a difference in performance. I know you are thinking that will hurt your gas mileage and it will, but you need to check if it is something that an unskilled person can work on or something that has to go to a transmission shop to solve.

If you do notice fewer problems then it could be the overdrive circuit which can be replaced by someone that is mechanically inclined. But if it doesn't change the symptoms with the overdrive off and new fluid and filter, then it is time to take it to a professional.

Going up hill to my house and around an S turn, the transmission suddenly failed. it was in drive, but was acting like it was in neutral. It hasn't been able to go into drive at all since then, and park is...

il tell you "exactly" what the problem is,,,the gearbox it very low on oil,,,,if there is any left in it that is??? check the auto gearbox "dip stick" then top it up to just under the full mark start the engine and run through all the fears with the brakes held on you dont need to drive the car yet,,,,when the motor is hot check the gearbox dip stick again top up if needs be,,
now try it up the road,,,,i bet it drive's just fine now!

Overdrive transmission

O/D light flashing is computer indicating an issue with the transmission -no surprise. Make sure the transmission fluid is still good (dosn't smell burnt, right level). Slipping could be the TCC (torque Converter clutch) - not a cheap part - but would only really slip in 4th gear (above 40 mph). Slipping before that could be numerous things in the trans (low fluid pressure, torque converter issues).
I would be tempted to replace the fluid anyhow, but there is a chance an expensive issue is starting to arise - and replacing the fluid on a failing transmission could cause it to fail 100% (or can fix it nearly 100%). These can be touchy transmissions, too much DIY without the right diagnostic tools can be bad. Not what you wanted to hear, and not an expert, but have had some expertise with these.hope that helps.
