Yes the spiders can make this noise or the DIFF carrier bearings

You only have one option. (well 2, if you don't want to drive the truck) the front diff turns no matter what you do. Your pinion bearings are shot. The pinion will still turn when you drive it, even if the driver shaft is gone. Bearing and seal kits run around $300. For newer models. Older ones a bit more. Once the pinion and ring gear go away, add $200. Spider gears and such. Costs go up to as much as $1300. You can get a used diff for around $300. Depends on year make and model.

ok, think about mass that moves under the forces of braking, things like engines and gearboxes, have you checked all those mounts for integrity, have a look to see if anything has been rubbing, new shiney spots appearing that weren't there before.

while you had the cover off did you by chance look at the condition of the ring gear and spider gears...if it was run for any length of time low on fluid or with two different sized tires you may need some repairs but first inspect the ring gear and rotate till you can see the 4 little beveled gears inside the differential ....use a screwdriver and check for excess movement...look at the crossshaft and look for wear.....hope this points you in the right direction.

Whining/grinding noise at deceleration


We have the same problem at our shop. We haven't rebuilt the front differential yet. We tried 3 different shafts on 2 different Jeeps and the noise is on both just the same. By greasing the front driveshaft cv joint, we got he noise to quiet some, but it is still way to loud. With the driveshaft out, the noise is gone. We are about to buy a new shaft from the dealer for $600. There are some service bulletins about some noisy driveshafts.

Sudden noise, whining in 1st gear, reverse jerky


Sounds like your final drive pin in your differential broke causing the main spider pin to tear through the case.Catastropic damage.Check for severe fluid leak under car.If no signs of leaks,check dipstick for greyish blk colored fluid.If this is the case you will need to replace transaxle & flush trans cooler.hope this helps

Increasingly loud noise coming from rear of '02 2WD 3.7L liberty


Spider gears are not difficult to replace...however, if they are worn, usually this contaminates the lube and can cause damage to carrier as well as pinion bearings...Those require precise settings with special tools and lots of experience to replace. Since you have had the noise for a long time, I can safely assume that debris has been building all that time. Spider gear set is not cheap...You may want to risk doing the job, but I would likely find another exact match, drum to drum replacement in a scrapyard. Generally I will only recommend a spider gear replacement if you have snapped a gear in half...an immediate failure
does not generate the kind of fine metal that wear does.
