If it is the old pull type there is the button that must be pushed on the switch to realease the pull rod before removing the switch from the back side of the dash some trim removal may be required to gain access to the flat nut holding the switch to the dash

I have a 97 nissan pickup and the head lights will not turn on, an the tail lights will not shut off. had to take fuse out to turn off tail lights. turn signal switch??

Yes it sounds like the switch is stuck in the park position.
You could pull the harness plug for the switch and check the circuits with a meter, or replace the switch.

My jeep grand cherokee dash light flashed and went out. I have replaced the head light switch and it didn't help. Also my over head lights whent out. I had to jump wire just to get my jeep home. Can you...

Hi Gene.

It is because of the lighting fail safe feature. If there is a problem in the head lamp circuit the dash does not turn on:

You need to check the headlamp circuit from switch to bulb. Check fuse and bulb first. Then double check the head lamp switch. Finally check voltages (or Ohms) to see if there is continuity between switch and fuseboard, and between fuse and bulb:

a bad dimmer switch more likely or light switch. get volt meter . check to see power going to switch. also make sure to check ground wire to lights.
