Is it while driving down the road or just sitting in the drive way while idling? It could be the powersteering, the A/C, or even the Alternator. If its a tapping noise then it could be the lifters or the pushrods taping against the rocker arms. Your best bet is to go to the parts store and get a stethescope and while its running touch both vavle covers, the A/C clutch while its off, then the housing while its on, the Alternator, the Powersteering pump. If you can't find it then go underneath and probe the starter and the oil pan along with the transmission.

Check all pulleys making sure its spring still putting pressure/tension on the belts, if not the belt will slip and also make noise, bearing might be going out, take WD40 and spay it on the pulley bearing and see if the noise stop, second check the fan cluth also. AC compressor also can cause lot of noise also when its running, turn ac switch off and see that make any diffrent also while engine running.

2003 GMC Savana Van. The resevoir is full. The radiator is full, yet rusty looking water. Ran hot, thermostat redlined. Let engine cool. Made it a few more miles. Mechanic wants to do water pump,...

Idea is simple, go to a actual radiator shop to see water is circulating , this is a clogged radiator/ or stuck thermostat or water pump. Master cylinder and serpentine has Nothing to do with your issue.

Motor making a loud tapping noise

Please open the bonnett and identify the tapping noise before we can decide on a possible fault.
It can be the slapping of belt, the water pump, the idler pulley, alternator.
If not the noise may be coming from the engine, possible tappet, cam noise or crank pulley being loose.
It is better you carefully hear the location of noise.A possible hint, spray some water to the belt, pulley, water pump, alternator pulley to see if the noise dies off . if so replace the confirmed part.
If within engine, teh section has to be confirmed but only after removing section.
Hope this help to identify. good day

1991 toyota camry. It has a new radiator and cap,

the a/c when running creates a lot of extra heat and needs second fan, if second fan is not working right this will cause overheating, if fan is creating a load noise it is likely bearing is bad and will not spin as fast as it should not cooling. also check that fan it not hitting anything if you describe loud noise i can give better idea

i would expect that the water pump has failed and would take a look closer in the morning and make sure nothing else has cracked, i expect the pump housing has but make sure its not a crack in the block or anything.
