  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove engine assembly from vehicle.
  3. Remove oil pan.
  4. Remove cylinder head cover.
  5. Remove timing chain cover as follows:
    • Remove crankshaft pulley bolt. To lock crankshaft pulley, use special tool 09917-68221 (camshaft pulley holder).
    • Remove crankshaft pulley. To remove crankshaft pulley, use special tools 09944-36011 and 09926-58010 (steering wheel remover and bearing puller attachment).
    • Remove A/C compressor bracket.
    • Remove alternator belt idler pulley, water pump pulley and alternator belt tensioner.
    • Remove timing chain cover bolts and nut.
    • For reinstallation of timing chain, turn crankshaft so that timing marks on cylinder head and lower crankcase match with those on sprockets as shown in figure.
    • Remove second timing chain as follows:
      • Turn crankshaft to meet following conditions.
        • Key (I) on crankshaft is positioned as shown.
        • Arrow mark on idler sprocket (II) points upward.
        • Marks on sprockets (III) match with marks on cylinder head. Note that this step must be followed for reinstallation of timing chain.
      • Remove timing chain tensioner adjuster No.2 and gasket. To remove them, slacken second timing chain by turning intake camshaft counterclockwise a little while pushing back pad.
      • Remove intake and exhaust camshaft timing sprocket bolts. To remove them, fit a spanner to hexagonal part at the center of camshaft to hold it stationary.
      • Remove camshaft timing sprockets and second timing chain.
      • warning
      • After second timing chain is removed, never turn intake camshaft, exhaust camshaft and crankshaft independently more than such an extent as shown. If turned, interference may occur between piston and valves and valves themselves, and parts related to piston and valves may be damaged.
      • Remove timing chain guide No.1.
      • Remove timing chain tensioner adjuster No.1.
      • Remove timing chain tensioner.
      • Remove idler sprocket and first timing chain.
      • Remove crankshaft timing sprocket.

Easier to put engine to top dead center on #1 piston, then both valves on #1 cylinder on the head will be closed. That would put it in mechanical time.

How to set timing chain on a 1997 audi a4 1.8 non turbo

is this a ground zero, never looked question
our 1.8 has a belt and chain.
called the AEB engine. 20 valves.... or is it the 16valve>?

ours is the DOHC head,
there are 47 steps. in the FSM.
and photos , (log in to alldata.com and look?)

the engine as s chain at the rear of the 2 cams, linking them.
and a front drive belt all must be timed by the book.
the first, fact to discover, is if it is and INTERFERENCE engine.
Im told it IS>!
if yes, do not crank engine over, util you are 3 times sure of timing
or boom, kiss off valves, or more..... damage has no limits.
the book tells you to match mark, the rear chain sprockets.
ill skip this, you implied front of engine belt.
there are 2 chapters one for rear chain
and one for belt.
here is the belt side.

  6. Remove the upper timing belt cover.

If reusing the timing belt, mark its rotational direction so it may be installed in its original position.
  1. Using the center bolt, rotate the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation to position the No. 1 cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC) of its compression stroke.
  2. Remove the damper pulley-to-crankshaft bolts and the damper.
  3. Remove the lower timing belt cover.
  4. Using a Torx Wrench T45, or equivalent, loosen the timing belt tensioner, push the tensioner downward and remove the timing belt.

SEE 5 MISSING PHOTOS THEN,.
iNSTALL
  1. Align the camshaft sprocket timing mark with the cylinder head cover mark.
  2. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket with the arrow facing the rotational direction.
  3. Install the lower timing belt cover.
  4. Using a bolt, secure the damper/belt pulley on the crankshaft.
  5. Align the crankshaft damper/belt pulley with the housing timing mark so that the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of its compression stroke.
  6. Install the timing belt on the camshaft sprocket and belt tensioner.
  7. Using a 2-pin Spanner Matra Tool No. V159 Wrench, or equivalent, lift (turn clockwise) the timing belt tensioner cylinder No. 1 until it is fully extended and tensioner cylinder No. 2 is raised approx. 1mm (3/8 inch); then, hand-tighten the mounting bolt.
  8. Rotate the crankshaft 2 complete rotation in the running direction.
  9. Inspect area 'A' for proper alignment with the upper edge of piston No. 2 and adjust if necessary.
  10. Area 'A' - adjustment OK
  11. Area 'B' - wear limit
  12. Area 'C' - re-adjust and check belt drive including tensioner for wear.

If the piston edge is located in area 'A', measurement 'D' is 25-29mm (31/32-1 1/8 inches).
  1. After adjustment has been verified, secure the tensioner with a 2-pin Spanner Matra Tool No. V159 Wrench, or equivalent, and tighten the mounting bolt.
  2. Complete the damper to crankshaft installation.
  3. Using the center bolt, rotate the crankshaft 2 rotations in the direction of engine rotation until the camshaft and crankshaft marks align with their respective reference points.
  4. Install the upper timing belt cover.
  5. Install the drive belts.
  6. The balance of assembly is in reverse order of removal.
  7. Install the negative battery cable last.
  8. Test drive the vehicle.

PS : a savvy mech will not do step 8 ,until he:
1: spins engine over by hands sparks out, to feel if the valves hit the pistons, ( a DUH factor if ever. there was)
and TRIPLE checking. all timing marks again before close up.

there is no forgiveness, like on free runners. not at all.

My mechanic has told me my cylinder number 4 has no compression, what is the best and worst case scenario in my renault megane dynamique 2006,could this be a very costly job,


Whatever the cause, the cylinder head will have to come off, so you are looking at some engine rebuilding. If the bottom end of the engine is still good (the pistons and piston rings and bearings on the crankshaft), you might get by with a head and valve job. Not cheap, but cheaper than a complete rebuild. Have your mechanic do a leakdown test before teardown, to pinpoint the reason for no compression in that cylinder.

I found a 2.0L VW engine for a Cabrio. Not sure if this is the right one, but here goes:

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

NOTE: Do not turn the engine or camshaft with the timing belt
removed. The pistons will contact the valves and cause internal engine damage.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the accessory drive belts,
    crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover(s).
  2. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft to
    TDC of No. 1 piston. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with
    the mark on the inner timing belt cover or the edge of the cylinder head.
  3. With the distributor cap removed, the rotor should be pointing toward the
    No. 1 mark on the rim of the distributor housing. On 8 valve engines, the notch
    on the crankshaft pulley should align with the dot on the intermediate shaft
    sprocket.
  4. Loosen the locknut on the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner
    counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt.
  5. Slide the timing belt from the sprockets.
    To install:

  6. Check the alignment of the timing marks. On 16 valve engines, the mark on
    the tooth should align with the mark on the rear belt cover.
  7. Install the new timing belt and tension the belt so it can be twisted 90°at
    the middle of it's longest section, between the camshaft and intermediate
    sprockets.
  8. Recheck the alignment of the timing marks and, if correct, turn the engine 2
    full revolutions to return to TDC of No. 1 piston. Recheck belt tension and
    timing marks. Readjust as required. Torque the tensioner nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45
    Nm).
  9. Install the belt cover and accessory drive belts.
  10. If the belt is too tight, there will be a growling noise that rises and
    falls with engine speed.


Diesel Engines

Some special tools are required. A flat bar, VW tool no. 2065A, is used to
secure the camshaft in position. A pin, VW tool no. 2064, is used to fix the
pump position while the timing belt is removed. The camshaft and pump work
against spring pressure and will move out of position when the timing belt is
removed. It is not difficult to find substitutes but do not remove the timing
belt without these tools.
NOTE: Do not turn the engine or camshaft with the timing belt
removed. The pistons will contact the valves and cause internal engine damage.



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the accessory drive belts,
    crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover(s). Remove the camshaft cover and
    rubber plug at the back end of the camshaft.
  2. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft to
    TDC of No. 1 piston. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with
    the mark on the inner timing belt cover or the edge of the cylinder head.
  3. With the engine at TDC, insert the bar into the slot at the back of the
    camshaft. The bar rests on the cylinder head to will hold the camshaft in
    position.
  4. Insert the pin into the injection pump drive sprocket to hold the pump in
    position.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner
    counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt. Slide the timing
    belt from the sprockets.
    To install:

  6. Install the new timing belt and adjust the tension so the belt can be
    twisted 45 degrees at a point between the camshaft and pump sprockets. Torque
    the tensioner nut to 33 ft. (45 Nm).
  7. Remove the holding tools.
  8. Turn the engine 2 full revolutions to return to TDC of No. 1 piston. Recheck
    belt tension and timing mark alignment, readjust as required.
  9. Install the belt cover and accessory drive belts.
  10. If the belt is too tight, there will be a growling noise that rises and
    falls with engine speed.

REMOVAL

CAUTION: The following procedure can only be used when the camshaft sprockets HAVE NOT BEEN LOOSENED or removed from the camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Gear/Sprocket and Timing Components, if sprocket(s) or camshaft(s) have been loosened or removed.

CAUTION: The 3.2/3.5L are NOT freewheeling engines. Therefore, care should be taken not to rotate the camshafts or crankshaft with the timing belt removed.

  1. Disconnect negative cable from remote jumper terminal.
  2. Remove upper radiator crossmember.
  3. Disconnect fan module electrical connector.
  4. Remove cooling fan module and accessory drive belts.
  5. Remove crankshaft damper and front timing belt covers.
  6. Mark belt running direction, if timing belt is to be reused.
CAUTION: When aligning timing marks, always rotate engine by turning the crankshaft. Failure to do so will result in valve and/or piston damage.

  1. Rotate engine clockwise until crankshaft mark aligns with the TDC mark on oil pump housing and the camshaft sprocket timing marks are between the marks on the rear covers (Fig. 94).
CAUTION: Align the camshaft sprockets between the marks on rear belt covers before timing belt removal or damage to valve and/or pistons could occur.

  1. Using a ink or paint marker; mark the exact position of the camshaft sprocket timing mark relative to the two timing marks on the rear timing cover.
NOTE: When timing belt tensioner is removed from engine, always store in the vertical (plunger facing upward) position

TIMING BELT TENSIONER

  1. When tensioner is removed from the engine it is necessary to compress the plunger into the tensioner body.
CAUTION: Compress the tensioner slowly, as damage to tensioner could result.

  1. Place the tensioner into a vise and SLOWLY compress the plunger (Fig. 96). Total bleed down of tensioner should take about 5 minutes.
CAUTION: Index the tensioner in the vise the same way it is installed on the engine. This is to ensure proper pin orientation when tensioner is installed on the engine.

  1. When plunger is compressed into the tensioner body install a pin through the body and plunger to retain plunger in place until tensioner is installed.
NOTE: When timing belt tensioner is removed from engine, always store in the vertical (plunger facing upward) position.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: This procedure can only be used when the camshaft sprockets HAVE NOT BEEN LOOSENED or removed from the camshafts.

CAUTION: If camshafts have moved from the timing marks, always rotate camshaft towards the direction nearest to the timing marks (DO NOT TURN CAMSHAFTS A FULL REVOLUTION OR DAMAGE to valves and/or pistons could result).

  1. Align the crankshaft sprocket with the TDC mark on oil pump cover (Fig. 97).
  2. Align the camshaft sprockets (to reference mark made upon removal) between the marks on the rear covers (Fig. 94).
  3. Install the timing belt starting at the crankshaft sprocket going in a counterclockwise direction (Fig. 97). Install the belt around the last sprocket. Maintain tension on the belt as it is positioned around the tensioner pulley.
  4. Holding the tensioner pulley against the belt, Install the tensioner into the housing and tighten to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) . Each camshaft sprocket mark should still fall between the cover marks.
  5. When tensioner is in place pull retaining pin to allow the tensioner to extend to the pulley bracket.
  6. Rotate crankshaft sprocket 2 revolutions and check the timing marks on the camshafts and crankshaft. The marks should line up within their respective locations (Fig. 97). If marks do not line up, repeat procedure.
  7. Install timing belt covers and crankshaft damper.
  8. Install accessory drive belts and cooling fan module.
  9. Install upper radiator crossmember.
  10. Connect negative cable to remote jumper terminal.
  11. Start engine and allow to idle for approximately 1 minute. If a noise is present from the timing belt/tensioner, air has possibly entered the tensioner.
    1. To remove air from tensioner; using a DRB III, operate the engine at speed of 1600-2000 RPM for 10 minutes. This will purge air from tensioner.
NOTE: If air is present, the timing belt tensioner will be soft and may generate noise. This noise should disappear after no more than 15 minutes of engine running time.

Looking for cam timing mark on diesel 2l motor?


If you don't know what your cam timing mark is and the cam belt is off, make sure that the crankshaft is on Top Dead Centre (TDC). Turn it clockwise using the pully bolt until the timing marks lign up. If you feel any resistance, go back a little and move the cam shaft about 45 degrees as the piston is making contact with a valve. Carry on with the crankshaft until it is right. Take the rocker cover off and turn the camshaft until the inlet and exhaust valves on the rear cylinder are both opening an equal amount. You will see the camshaft lobes pushing them open. If you feel too much resistance move the crankshaft around a little to let the valves clear the pistons, then move the crankshaft back. If you look at the front cylinder, you will see that both valves are fully closed. This is TDC. See if you can find a mark and what it is lining up with. When you have reassembled everything, using a spanner on the crankshaft nut, turn the engine over clockwise for two full revolutions and if it turns without locking up (pistons touching valves) and all the timing marks still line up you can start it up. If your pump timing is still correct, you should be done. Don't run the engine with the rocker cover off or you will get oil everywhere.

How do i set the timing on the balancing shaft(just replaced the belt) of a 1995 misubishi rvr 2.0L sports gear


1- Take off all spark plug so you can turn the crankshaft easily to align Top Dead Center (TDC) . 2- Take off the engine cover to see the notch mark on the cam shaft. 3- Turn the crankshaft until the mark on the pulley match with the 0 on the timing mark. At this point if the mark on the camshaft all align then you are good. If it is not then you have to take off the timing belt to do the correct alignment as following items # 4 to 7. 4- Turn the crankshaft until the Piston # 1 is at top. Put in a screw driver to make sure it is at the top. Make sure the Crank shaft at 0 mark. If not, keep turning until it is at desired position. 5- Turn the camshaft to align at the mark in the straight line with the crankshaft mark. 6- Make sure the camshaft lobe is not pressing to open the intake or exhaust valve for piston # 1. This is to ensure it is at ignition stage: Piston is up, all valves closed. 7- Once everything is aligned at TDC, put the timing belt on. Tighten the tension adjuster, then you are good to go.

Trying to set timing belt (new )


Be very careful with this timing belt change.
The key setting is to get the crankshaft and camshaft properly synchronized !
I believe this is an "interference" engine. If the crankshaft and camshaft are not set properly the valves will hit the pistons and be bent ! That would destroy the engine.
DO NOT TURN OVER THE ENGINE UNTIL THIS IS SET CORRECT

No you will not hear the valves hitting the pistons - you will hear the engine turning over faster than normal because you have lost compression.
The engine has marks on the gears and pulleys that will align with marks on the engine block at TDC which should be done before the timing belt is removed ! If you have did not do that and either the crankshaft or camshaft has moved, you have a problem. You can get a manual from the library, auto supply store, eBay or a manual seller.

Putting on the timing belt could use an extra set of hands- when you line up
the marks and the engine is at TDC, the injection pump has some spring tension
and will jump back one tooth. this means you have to hold the pump pulley in
place while putting on the belt. so an extra set of hands makes things much
easier.
