Question about Mercury Cougar

2 Answers

We own three newer model Mercury Cougars -- '99, '01, and '02. The '99 has about 50K miles, the '01 about 19K, and the '02 about 17K. All three are driven at least four to five times a week. The '02 had an alternator fail at the end of May '06; the '01 had an alternator fail in either '07 or '08. Now the '02 has had another alternator fail. The Lincoln Mercury dealer charges about $600-700 for this repair, and its failure is terribly dangerous -- I was turning left on a six lane road (45 mph +++ traffic) at rush hour when it failed as I was driving across three lanes of traffic. This time they tell me a diode in the alternator has failed (and fortunately, my battery indicator light went on.) The repair is very expensive and too frequent, and the consequence of failure is scary. Is this a freguent problem with these vehicles? We have had no problem with the '99.

What a rip off in the dealer,
I found a place for your alternator part and you can tell any shop to replace place it for you with 0.5 hour labor. And this one will fit all your model 99 to 02.

Alternator failure is not dangerous while engine is running, since the battery is providing source of electrical until it drains. Therefore, it is not going to turn off your engine in the middle of the road. To be save when you are driving and the battery indicator is on, just turn off Radio/ CD and AC to preserve the battery charge until you get home.

Alternator is to provide the charge to battery. Without it when a battery is draining, the engine can't be started. Alternator is really lasting, your case is just happening to be in the bad one in the product line...

They made three different alternators for the 99 model. One for the 4 cylinder and two different ones for the 6 cylinder. As for the 01 and the 02 the design for the housing is different but the guts are pretty much the same. The 01 and 02 have updated electronics involved to help protect the cars ECM "computer " should the electrical system fail It is designed to keep the voltage from backing up through the system and doing more damage. As I have not found that these fail more than any others, They are however more expensive to repair. They do not seam to be any better or worse than the old system. I have also looked for any conversions to a different system but there are very few alternatives. Sorry there isn't anything else than to just try another shop. Maby not use the dealer due to the shear expense. Most shops can change this alternator for about half that price. Hope this answers your question. Please re-post with updates or questions. 01 mercury cougar lost clear fluid & there is no pressure to gas pedal, not going but starts

Check the transmission, the automatic transmission on the newer (1999+) cougars if develop internal issues and will cause the powerband servo to come out. Look under car near front for a round opening about that will be very shiny (this will be where the fluid came out). If you see this then you'll need to replace transmission, it will be cheaper then rebuilding. I've owned 2 of these cars.

Cougar 1999 lights flicker after changing alternator have 14.7 volts on output

Voltage regulator is not doing its job, and it is allowing excessive voltage into the circuit. If you do not address this problem, some light bulbs and LEDs might start to burn out. Either replace the voltage regulator, or modify the circuit between alternator and regulator to match later model cougars, where this problem was solved.

Just curious if anyone knows about 2002 mercury cougars

For repairs on speedometer sensor, if you remove hose from egr valve, and with one hnad you can reach down and pull clip from side of sensor for removal, mine broke off and required replacement. And No, the other parts will not fall into trans housing when gear is removed. They bottom out on other components in housing. Once the gear is removed, a new sensor is only about $50.

Headlight switch replacement

Here is the recall info.

The vehicles affected by this recall are certain ‘92 & ‘93 model year Ford Thunderbirds and Mercury Cougars. The problem; the headlights turn off, then come back on after driving with the fog lights on. Ford is replacing the headlight switch and if necessary the electrical connector for the headlight switch. Repairs for a safety recall are to be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner, even if you are not the original owner. In addition, if the headlight switch was replaced before the recall, the owner is entitled to a refund for repairs. But the owner should still bring their vehicle in for inspection. Why? The replacement part may not have been of the new design.
