If a converter is bad, its usually clogged or the ceramic insides is chipping away
resulting in a rattling noise. Kinda like a baby rattle. The car will emit a rotton eggs smell or sulfur odor if the converter is bad. Clogged converter will result in the car stalling soon after its started.
Does your do this ?
My first repair would be the O2 sensors. they just screw into the exhaust pipes...near the converter
Usually, new O2 sensors will solve poor performance and gas mileage.
Some cars have more than one. These are about $30-40 dollars each.
Converters are part of the exhaust pipes that are sometimes shaped in a "H" configuration...so the whole exhaust pipe will need to be replaced that has the converters on it. Its a one piece
assembly and cost a bit more than the O2 sensors. Change or repair one variable at a time to attack the problem and be more cost effective.

If the Codes were Read and they Turned out to be "EMISSIONS " Related this Is Defiantly Very Possible. Also the 02 Sensor is Probably the Most Failure Prone Component in the Emissions System.I Hope Im Of Some Help to You.

How many oxygen sensors are there on a 1996 ford explorer 8 cyl., 4.0 eng.

The answer depends on the type of exhaust system you have. You will have either 3 or 4 total O2 sensors on your V8. If you have single exhaust with a single catalytic converter then you will have 3 O2 sensors (2 upstream sensors & one downstream sensor - "up or down stream" meaning before of after the catalytic converter). If you have either dual exhaust and/or two catalytic converters then you have 4 O2 sensors (2 upstream & 2 downstream). If you have an MIL light (malfunction indicator light, or "check engine light") the code will indicate "front bank / bank one", which is one of the 2 upstream O2's before the catalytic converter(s), or "rear bank / bank two", which is one of the O2's after the catalytic converter(s).

Hi, P0420 code means a catalytic converter fault.
The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).

P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

You will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms.

Causes: A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe

I am being told I have to replace 3 catalytic converters and computer on my 2001 Toyota Sienna van to solve a check engine light on. I would think the codes would better pinppoint the issue. the quote on...

First, what are the codes?

Secondly, there are no codes that specifically indicate a failed catalytic converter issue.

A code relating to an oxygen sensor may not indicate a failed catalytic converter(s). It may be a defective oxygen sensor.

There are 3 catalytic converters on this model. One is connected directly to the right exhaust manifold, one is connected below the left exhaust manifold and one is connected under the vehicle before the two mufflers.

The last oxygen sensor (beyond the catalytic converter under the vehicle) is the one that compares the oxygen level in the combustion by-products for legal pollution requirements. It is screwed into the exhaust pipe and its wiring travels up into the vehicle through the floor and making a connection under the passenger front seat then to the computer for analysis.

A code relating to an oxygen sensor may indicate a failed oxygen sensor heater circuit in the oxygen sensor. This does not mean that the oxygen sensor is defective, only the oxygen sensor heater circuit.

If a catalytic converter is clogged, you should experience performance problems.

Obd code 141

DESCRIPTION
The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses oxygen sensor signals to maintain the air fuel mixture at the ratio resulting in optimum fuel economy and reduced emissions. The amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases indicates, to the front oxygen sensor, whether the air fuel mixture being supplied to the engine cylinders is rich or lean. The readings of the rear oxygen sensor are used to indicate the efficiency of the catalytic converter. The ECM calculates catalytic convener efficiency by comparing the rear oxygen sensor signal to the front oxygen sensor signal.

A normal oxygen sensor signal will constantly fluctuate above and below 500 mV , with the front oxygen sensor signal frequency of at least 5 Hz at 2500 RPM . Due to the effect of the catalytic converter, the rear oxygen sensor signal frequency will be lower than the front oxygen sensor signal frequency. If the rear oxygen sensor signal coincides with the front oxygen sensor signal a large percentage of the time, this indicates a loss in efficiency of the catalytic converter or a malfunction within the fuel system.

FAILURE CONDITIONS
After the engine runs for 2 minutes , the ECM checks the rear oxygen sensor heater circuit. If during two driving cycles the rear oxygen sensor's heater resistance is less than 4.6 Ohms or greater than 19.5 Ohms , the ECM will set P0141 and MIL will turn on. This code indicates an unusually high or low heater circuit resistance reading by the rear oxygen sensor or ECM.
