Most fuel pumps are electric nowadays. Often, they are located within the fuel tank itself, though some models of cars may have 2 pumps.

Locate your fuel pump. If it is in the fuel tank there is usually a circular inspection cover held down with screws.

Disconnect your battery (but remember the radio code will have to be reinstalled..)
Undo the screws.
Make a note of the coloured wires and which connections they go to. Undo the wires.

Different cars have different fittings to attach the fuel pump. You will need a wrench or two to undo/disconnect the fuel line and pump retaing bolts.

Again, with an in-tank fuel pump, it is easily lifted out. It is not a big or difficult job. What you see in front of you will be self-explanatory.

Other locations for an electric fuel pump:
Close to the fuel tank
Underneath the car (just follow the fuel line from the engine..)
In the engine bay.

Years ago I owned a VW Golf Estate (think they're called station wagons in the States..). The fuel pump was in-tank beneath an inspection cover. It was very easy to change.

You will be able to do the job within an hour, irrespective where the pump is. Just remember to disconnect that battery first ...

2005 KIA Rio fuel pump is out is there a special tool for the compression ring or do i need to drop the tank and hammer it out

the fuel pump on these should be a plate with about 6 screws (just under the rear seat by the way), the fuel pump "module"(entire assembly),and the o ring. i dont remember any special tools i used. should be pretty straight forward and when you put it in it will want to stay up. dont worry, they are spring loaded. just simply put the screws in and snug a little at a time going aroung the circle a few times.
