Question about 1995 Pontiac Firebird

My coolant is leaking out of my coolant tank from a pipe that runs accross the bottom of the engine below the bottom radiotor hose. Can that pipe be replaced or is this a bigger problem. I have a new water pump

My 2001 Terracan highlander has coolant leaking under the engine.Can someone tell me where the leak is coming from and how to fix it? The car has a v6 3.5l engine.


Could be welsh plugs on side of engine are corroded.
Could be a smaller pipe like a heater hose pipe or an auxilary cooling pipe .Had one of these little extra pipes on a mitsubishi sigma under the inlet manifold that was leaking.
Did you use a coolant in the engine as water can corrode welsh plugs in engines as I found out on my car !.

How do i change the radiator fluid?


Most radiators have a drain plug on the bottom tank the engine block also has a drain plug . Remove the radiator cap ,open both drains ,let all the coolant run out, if there is no radiator plug remove the lower hose , remove the heater demister hoses, with the heater control on hot flush out all the coolant from the heater radiator. with a garden hose, till the water runs clean, tighten the radiator plug or re fit the hose,put a garden hose into the radiator and flush out till the water at the block plug runs clean ,refit the heater hoses, refit the block plug, fill the radiator from the hose leave the cap off , If it has a overflow tank clean and flush it. start and run engine for 5 minutes top up radiator if needed . stop engine and drain out all water. most important that all old coolant is drained out, only buy the best coolant you can . If you make up your own use only distilled water. keep some to top up with never mix with another brand. Fill radiator with coolant top up over flow tank, run engine top up coolant as needed, refit radiator cap run for another 10 minutes check for leaks,

Thermostat gasket blown


Is it all one piece, the outlet pipe and the t-stat housing? The gasket goes on the bottom of the housing where it mates to the engine. If the coolant is leaking from the bottom of the housing, that would require a new gasket. If coolant is leaking where the radiator hose connects to the pipe, have you tried tightening the hose clamp?
If the outlet pipe and housing are separate, there may be an O-ring seal between them. You may want to pull off the radiator hose and check if the pipe is so badly corroded and rusted that it cannot seal anymore, or may have a hole in it, especially if it is thin metal.

I have an audi 97 a4 6 sylander and i had to change the metal pipe wich transfer water from reservor to termostat housing do i need to bleed the system after fix and soo wher is the bleeding valve thanks...


you dont have to bleed the water it automatically takes out the air when it runs and the thermostat valve opens check the level again after a run of 5 miles or when the temp is in the middle

remember not to check when the engine is hot

Replacing thermostat


follow the bottom pipe of the radiator to the engine block. the thermostat is close to that.

a good idea would be to flush your system (get a bottle radiotor flush from a motor spares shop and follow instructions. It makes sense since you are going to be draining the system anyways and clearly you have an overheating problem so you are killing two birds with one stone

make sure the engine is off and cooled down. Hot radiator fluid is higher than boiling point.

remove the cooling system cap to ensure there is no pressure in the system.

loosen the hose clamps of the above mentioned pipe. remove pipe, from engine block and radiator.

Look for bolts on and close to where the radiator hose connects. there should be two ir three.

Loosen and remove. gently remove the housing. Be careful when removing the old thermostat and new thermostats do not come with the rubber seal you see around the thermo.

Replace with identical thermo. when replacing the housing remember to apply gasket sealant. this takes 8 to 12 hours to harden / cure.

replace the radiator hose to be one the safe side. tighten clamps, fill up radiator with anti-freeze/summer coolant and water.

You should be up and running in a day or two

Why did my 320d, E46, water hose burst?


It could be due to age. Split hoses aren't uncommon.
However, it could be due to either a radiator blockage or a cylinder head problem - which is allowing exhaust gases to find their way into the cooling system via a leaking head gasket. When this happens the cooling system becomes pressurised by the exhaust gases.

To check if your radiator is blocked, run the engine until it is hot. The coolant goes into the radiator via the top hose and into the engine through the bottom hose.

Carefully feel the top and bottom hose. If the bottom hose feels much cooler than the top hose, then that indicates a radiator blockage. If the bottom hose feels 'flat' and 'squashed' that is another indicator - though it also can point to head gasket problems.

To check if there are head gasket problems, first check the oil on the dipstick. If it is a 'creamy sludge' then that indicates coolant has found its way into the lubricating system via a leaking head gasket.

Also remove the cap from the raditor expansion tank (where you fill it with coolant/water). Is there any sign of oil/sludge in the expansion tank? Another sign of head gasket problems.

With a COLD engine, remove the cap from the radiator expansion tank and then fire the engine up. Watch the coolant as the engine ticks over ... at first bubbles will appear as air in the coolant escapes. The bubbles should stop after a few moments as the engine warms. If the bubbles continue -or there is 'violent bubbling' that's teling you there is a head gasket problem.

I presume that your car hasn't been overheating or 'running rough' at times, as you haven't mentioned that. Overheating and 'running rough' can also be symptoms of head gasket problems.

All being well .. no radiator blockage or apparent head gasket problems, it is more than likely that the hose burst due to age/mileage.

Engine coolant low light on, radiator constantly needs water dont know where its going


re fill your cars radiator/coolant bottle then rev the engine high. you may need somones help itll make it easier . if there is a lot of steam coming out of the tail pipe and or the exhaust smells sweet like coolant then its a head gasket problem. if that doesnt find the problem park you car on a large piece of cardboard or somthing light in color. it easier to put you car on ramps or jack stands, let it idle for a long time and then look for drips and spots. if there are none then try reving you engine and recheck, from there you can locate directly above hwere its is dripping from the engine / chassis then you can trace the wet surfaces up from there check you oil as well if its to high or smells like coolant its a head gasket

That drain line is for the box that holds the air conditioner evaporator and the heater coil. It seems that your heater coil has sprung a leak and the leaked fluid is coming out the drain. You have to replace the heater coil, which on most cars involves removing a lot of the interior equipment, including the dash board on many cars. A job best left for the repair shop unless you're very adventurous and patient. Even then you will have to take it to a shop to have the air conditioning system recharged.
