Question about 1995 Chevrolet Blazer

1 Answer

1996 Cargo Van 5.7L tbi. Need to hold excel. to floor to get it to start. Once started, runs rough, at any RPM, and belches blue and black smoke. Ran beautiful and then started this one day out of the blue. Left the project for another day, went out and it started right up and ran like it used to. Next day started acting up again same way and here I am. Any advice on where to start would be appreciated. I am basically a diesel guy, so I definitely need guidance.

Chances are your TBI injector is dirty, sticking, failing or the "blue" wire to the injector has rubbed through and is intermittently touching ground and holding the injector open.
Pressing the accelerator to the floor will cause the ECM to go into a "clear flood" condition, it will not send a fuel pulse to the injector and hold it closed.
Remove the injector and clean it out, not very difficult, you can use carburetor cleaner. Trace the blue wire back as far as you can and put some added tape over anything that looks like it may be a rub-through problem and I believe you will be good to go.
Don't forget to change the fuel filter once in a while, slightly clogged fuel filters will shorten the life of your tank mounted fuel pump.
Good luck.
Regards.

I have a s10 with the 2.8 tbi, it starts and runs great but once warm it dies when i let the clutch out and the only way to restart is to hold on the floor. then it smokes black almost acts like the choke...

you need to replace the map sensor it sort of tells the computer what kind of load engine is operating at and along with other info computer adjust air fuel ratio accordingly thats why it runs fine with clutch in engine in no load situation

Now starting when cold, it belches black smoke and runs very roug

Sounds like either the float level is too high, there is a problem with the float needle valve or the power valve is stuck. I'd take the carb off and either replace it or take it apart and check everything inside. If you do nothing, chances are it will either get worse or if it's a small piece of junk inside, it may clear up by itself...I'd take it apart. Since it's pretty new, if you are careful, likely you won't need a gasket kit.

2003 tdi, 54 k miles, bought car new, had manifold cleaned, new glow plugs and harness. car has been driven only short commutes for 3 years. Heavy blue smoke at startup, then it clears right up. No...

valve seals are going. when car sits excess oil gets past the valve seals then when you staRT up it burns the oil off then runs fine and no more blue smoke. It is fine to run like that had the same in a dodge caravan 1996 6cyl. ran another 100 000 km. and still ran fine got rid of it for other reasons.

Well Mike" a few things to check could be Breather on fuel tank /fuel return to tank pipe/ as pump can pump high pressure and excess has to return to tank and it sounds like yours is overfueling./take air cleaner off and all pipes and check for any thing partly blocking air flow/also check any black hoses coming from the engine breathers/going to air in take/make sure all cylinders got good compression

Car running badly

do your basics, check water in the fuel, loose intake clamps including turbo lines. maybe try a fuel additive to increase cetane rating. . most fuel sold in the US has a lower cetane rating

It's time for a Italian tune up!

The blue smoke can be one of two thing.

oil drop from the valve stem (from engine head to cyclinders)
or
diesel soot collect inside the exhaust system.

===
I will take a 5-10 minutes high rpm (not redline) ran on the highway.
Pay close attention to the rear view mirror and look for black diesel soot.
=== I will use Diesel Cleen or similar product to condition the fuel. (keep moisture down)
Use the recommended amount of SEAFOAM oil additive to condition the valve stem seal/rubber parts.

I can not rule out excessive blown by.
Can you get a diesel compression tester?
When was the last valve adjustment?

Please post the actual odometer on the engine and I will follow up on it.
