Question about 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

I have a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4 cylinder quad 4 engine. It starts and runs fine until it warms up about 3 minutes. Then if you shift it to reverse it dies instantly. Once it cools off it will go back into reverse. It does not die in drive or any other gear. Is this in the valve body or could it be the converter lock down solenoid?

I have a 94 Pontiac Grand Am SE 5 speed standard with the 2.3L SOHC Quad 4-138 4 cyl engine. It idles fine; but when you go and shift the car bucks and has little power. Better be going 30 mph before...

This sounds like it may be misfiring, the quad four engine is famous for misfiring theres a coil cover under the top plate where the sparkplugs go, if you remove the 4 bolts and pull it up you will see the sparkplugs and that cover will contain coils and coil cover and boots, i would replace the sparkplugs and the coil cover and sparkplug boots, heres some pictures of the parts, this is where i would start it a tune up, and also check air filter and replace fuel filter,johnjohn2_31.jpgjohnjohn2_32.jpg

94 quad 4 when warm no fire on cyl 1 and 3

Pull plug on cyl 1 leave it attached to plug wire, place it on intake manifold, have someone turn the key over to crank without starting it. If your coil is good spark should be more white or blueish indicating a high voltage spark red or orange indicates a poor spark from a faulty coil. Do this on both cylinders to check. Inspect all plugs and wires while you're at it too.
