Most older gm cars you can use dexron 2 transmission fluid or find in your local parts store a good brand of universal fluid.

where ever you are geting the new transmission from and find out if you need a 3 or 4 speed from looking it up from the vin# on the vehicle.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I LOOKED IT UP IN THE HAYNES MANUAL IT SAID YOU HAVE TO JACK THE CAR UP LEVEL, AND THERE IS A PLUG ON THE SIDE OF THE TRANSMITION, YOU TAKE IT OUT IF FLUID COMES OUT THEN YOU ARE GOOD.

thanks for all the correct info very nice,heres a diagram to show you where its located.also a picture of the speed sensor, you just remove one hold down bolt and it pulls out of trany,hope this helps.
