Question about 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

99 grandprix 3.8 supercharged gtp starts and stays in second gear..fluid is red not burnt, doesn't slip stays in second even on take off..code says performance solenoid stuck off.

Not solved yet..All input is welcome.

Replace the faulty solenoid and see if that fixes it

    Thanks bill gonna replace them all, attempting to do an outside repair with transmission in vehicle, transmission is very clean like a rebuilt one, and wiring harness wasn't fastened back in clips, but heard that most when rebuilt, shop doesn't replace solenoids..Will let you know results...Thanks.

    Changed all solenoids, still getting po756 code performance solenoid b stuck off, does shift between 2nd and 3rd now, so in process of removing valve body, because after changing solenoids, was in process of filter and fluid change, it had no filter....A$$$..Pan was pretty cruddy, assuming valve body is filthy with debris..going to dissasemble and clean it and try again..Never buy a junkyard transmission without taking the pan off..Transmission had a tag saying remanufactured using recycled parts..Other words junkyard.

    there are a few junk yards that actually do rebuild the transmissions as their trade depends on happy return customers
    most junkyard shops do simply replace the faulty transmission with another one unless they are just junk yard dogs after money
    I believe that it it is always cheaper ( unless you are selling the car) to exchange your transmission with a fully reconditioned unit from an accredited transmission repair specialist shop
    That way you get a warranty period as well
    The bit of very important information you forgot to mention was that it was a junk yard transmission as we all thought that the problems were in a previously operating box and the problems just started

    Bill it did just start it was driven for several months with no issues, then one day it started and stayed in second gear.

Make sure the 4 gear clutch hub is not stripped out causing your problem. Solenoid wont fix that.

I'm assuming you're running a manual transmission. In this case, I'd switch to a lower viscosity transmission fluid. It may make the difference between in gear and waiting for the gates to "open."

Im looking at purchasing an 02 GTP but my mechanic friends tell me to stay away from them because the superchargers have issues? are they right?


Remanufactured nose drive kits consisting of nose cone, drive pulley, lubricant,
sealant and coupler are available. The nose kits are an excellent alternative to replacing an
entire supercharger when dealing with low mileage bearing noise or leaky seal concerns.

This was from a service bulletin in June 2003.

check on side of trans, should look like sensor with electrical connection, run scanner for trouble codes

Crank sensor


It should be located directly behind the crank shaft pulley.. There also may be a second one on back bottom side of engine between engine and firewall..

check fuel pump resister. its conector is by the batt. pump runs through it in run, not for 3 sec. when key is turned on. thats why it will start and then quit this happend to my 99 gtp

Have the vehicle scanned for diagnostic trouble codes,and repair any codes.More than likely the trans needs a rebuild.If the fluid smelled burnt,then obviously clutches or bands are burnt inside the trans.Changing the fluid just got rid of the smell,whatever is burnt is still hurnt.It is best to stop driving the vehicle,as continuing to drive it will just cause more damage to whatever is damaged.Those transmissions are prone to pump problems too.
