I have a 2002 4.7 jeep grand cherokee limited. It has a miss. Smokes but no code. White smoke. Oil looks perfect on dipstick. No bubbles in coolant at radiator.

It misfires, that is clue one, and REAL.
the scan will tell you what cylinder misfires, , why wait.
why drag out knowing whats wrong, scan it, and stop wasting time.
and money, guessing will be expensive.
got tools>? or are you just asking for the blind folks to guess.
or worse like me quoting statistics.
first off that white smoke
you never once said where it shoot out of.
i can think of 3 places,
tail pipe end
engine bay,
or mid car.
where,
and more shocking is not say if the smoke is steam or oil burning.
steam will be AF coolant smell, sweet.
oil smells like burning oil and takes a long to time to go way,
if you have never smelled burning oil, drip some on a hot exh. manifold and learn now, and save guessing all day what white means.

no bubbles in rad neck. tells me (guessing) that its not dropping,
levels day by day. is it.
but is not proof, that. (if head gasket is bad it will progress worse)
best is lead down test.s
or doing an engine compression test. W.O.T.

lots and lots of signs there are.
engine overheating, funny sounds in the heater core, struggling.
spark plug tips turn green (or AF color)
steam out tail pipe end. hot and cold engine both.
steam pasting rad to side expansion tank.

why not scan it, first.
what if say P0306 is there.
so you do compression on cyl 6 and its 50psi.(dead fail)
all in 30min work. (i can do it in 15m flat, the scan in 1min.)
longer if COP COILS. (coils over plug)
why not? use a scan tool
you can not fix modern cars lacking said tool.
cant.\

really that smoke is the key
    smoke + misfire.
    smoke at tail end.
it can also be mix of AF and oil, at tail burning. AF = antifreeze coolant.
scan it and compression test is next.
did you over heat the engine ever last year?

does the $2 AF test kit shows protection at 50% or 0?(water = 0 = bad)
if you dont keep the antifreeze up, you will crack the block and heads.
do it in fall before first freeze and win.

Water in the gasoline, or a leaking head gasket. A leaking gasket may not show water foaming or discoloration in the oil, but level in the radiator will go down over time.

Limited. Why would it be smoking after replacing one plug?

what smokes. we are blind here.
you must stay.

1: end of tail pipe smokes
2: or, with hood up the exhaust manifold smokes due to oil we dropped there. (common on much service)
and what color is it.?
from where.?
tail pipe can do 3 colors
white goes away fast ,called steam.
white stays way too long called burned oil smoke,
and black (unburned fuel) and smells like gas..

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited v8 4.7 with 155,000 mi. It recvently began burning oil and blowing white smoke.

Check the water to see it there's oil in it ...and...check the oil to see if it has water in it or if it's higher on the dipstick or not.

Sounds like a blown head gasket or cylinder rings.

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited made some thumping noise followed by boiling sound then a "pppsssstttt" with steam The theromstat reading was in the middle and check gauge light illuminated....

The first place to look regarding a problem like yours is the thermostat. Replace it, refill the system (it's OK to do the work without draining but you will need to replace whatever you lost doing the work).
When re-filling, turn the heater on high, fill 'till it doesn't take any more coolant, turn the engine off exactly when the engine reaches normal operating temp, wait about five minutes, re-start and continue filling till full.
Monitor everything for the first day. Any overheating, leaks, white smoke from the tailpipe, oil in the cooling system or coolant in the engine oil indicates you have a larger problem that requires further diagnosis. if all is OK you are done!!!
Any questions, just ask.

1996 jeep cherokee miss fires and white smoke from exhaust. replaced head gasket and still runs the same.. runs fine when cold.

White smoke is usually the sign of a blown headgasket. I would have the coolant system pressure tested before any serious damage is done.

Keep in mind this codes:
- Black is excessive fuel
- Blue is oil
- White is coolant

Then, if you see white smoke from the tailpipe, you have coolant escaping into the intake system.

Keep us updated.

2001 exaust smokes at times engine runs good no missfire running 10-30 motor oil

Exhaust smoke is not a good thing, it can slowly destroy the catalytic converter. The color of the smoke is important to know, gray smoke is usually oil burning and white smoke is coolant.

Two choice:
1. Inspect the Head Gasket; Cause: head gasket leaking coolant into cylinders
2. inspect the Engine; Cause: Cracked block leaking coolant into cylinders.

Coolant is not a flammable liquid, therefore a lot of coolant in cylinder creates starting problem. You should check your engine and the coolant system for this issue.

The first thing you can do is check the oil dipstick - you're looking for a milky brown color as opposed to a dark brown (normal) color for oil - unless you've recently had an oil change - then it will be like honey. If you don't see any discoloration - I would then look around the the bottom of the area where the valve covers are located - the valve covers sit atop the heads and if you have a "blown" head gasket - you may see evidence of water/coolant seepage. You can also take the vehicle to a mechanic, who can do a simple test using air pressure to isolate a potential gasket issue.

Good luck (remember rated this post).

2001 grand cherokee - brand new radiator starts smoking every week - must refill coolant every week but no leaks anywhere. Help!

There is a leak. the coolant is going somewhare. where does it smoke from? thats where to start looking. if it smokes out the tail pipe, it could be coolant and may need a head gasket or head? A shop can tell you if theres a head gasket problem.
