1999 Pontiac Grand AM 4DR. SE fuel gauge and other problems(help)

I have a very good-sized dent right over where u put the gas into the car(sorry don't know the technical term). Anyways, the fuel gauge fluxuates all over the place from e to full to half to full back to e(it's crazy). I wanted to know what could really be wrong that will cause the gauge to act up? also want to know what to check for after the dent is popped out and how to check it all. Oh and if someone can tell me how to pop that dent out(like i said its big and in that quirky spot) i would appreciate it alot

I have a 97 and an 00 Grand Prix and an 03 Pontiac Montana. The fuel gauge in all three vehicles don't work. The dealer here says it's a common problem in Colorado where I live. The government required additives in the gas cause corrosion problems with the fuel level sensor float linkage that sends the signal to the fuel gauge. The repair requires the removal of your fuel tank and replacement of the linkage and sensor. It would cost somewhere around $500. I've leared to reset my trip meter with every fill-up and watch the miles and check the fuel mileage with every fill-up to make sure I know when I'm about to run out.

First: for the dent, Call a dent removal person. Its about $50 here in California. It will come out better than if you do it yourself.

Second: If the dent isnt actually pinching a wire its not the reason for the gauge dancing. i would be looking for a loose wire, possibly the connector to the tank. If this doesnt work the gas tank will have to be removed or electrical test will have to be performed.

fuel pump until controls this. Replace the whole unit.
if not a unit, rare, but you then have a wiring issue.

With that pump you did the fuel filter also right.. I know you did,

or should have.. BUT what about that gas you pulled out of the tank? was it good gas, Did you put the old gas back in? Maybe watered down gas??

Just a few ideas.. Sorry.. BCB..

Do I have to remove the gas tank to inspect/change the fuel pump on a 1991 pontiac grand prix?

Unfortunately, yes. It's a pain. I own a 1991 Pontiac grand prix SE 3.1L.

My fuel pump problem started when I ran out of gas (gas gauge was offset) Of course it shuts off w/o gas but it will more likely kill your fuel pump and clog the $#!t out of your filter.

If it makes a buzzing sound under the vehicle w/o the engine running, near the trunk area, replace it along with the filter.

seems like your oil pressure switch gave up, its located on the side of the oil filter, you can take it out and test with a amp meter. it should cost you less than 20 bucks to buy something like that.

Sounds like air in fuel line. Purge fuel line. By "crank", do you mean engine spins but won't catch? Try starter fluid in intake.

Change coils and plugs and engine is still not running right

you need fuel, air and spark at right time and place.
check all that. check a plug by crancking if sparking. check another one.
if ok go to fuel system.
Best is to have a vacuum gauge hooked up. Nobody uses that old trick. You can us that gauge for inlet vacuum or for fuel punp inspection.

Put you attention to fuel safety cut off valcve on proper functioning.
Check critical wire harness connections for poper contact and voltage level.

your fuel pump/fuel gauge assembly are mounted in top of your gas tank probably when you overfilled it popped loose jamming your fuel gauge you will need to drop your tank down and check this (make sure you empty tank first if not its a heavy load )inspect fuel guage assembly for damage and probably just reinstall if not damaged good luck hope this helps you
