No year car stated.
each has pros/cons, like all things do.
used only at home or work and home.?
is the at work power on a timer, ?
there are 3 types.
mag mount (slapped on to oil pan steel pan)
freeze/core plug heater.
inline loop heater. (id go for this, it many draw less current)
less current can equate to not blowing the fuses at work.
or a home, and no surprises in the morning. (or)
or the most easy to installed be, best for you.
who knows what you would like.?

My heater / defrost is not blowing warm / air. My temperature gauge is reading normal.

The heater consists of a small radiator, A inlet hose with a inline tap, connected to the engine cooling system. A return hose running from the heater radiator back to the cooling system. First place to look , the cable that controls the tap, then the tap is it jammed in the shut position . are the hoses perished or kinked, one of the above will be causing the fault.

All i get is cold air when i use the heater

Have your mechanic check the cars THERMOSTAT. It sits inline on the motor block between the radiator and the motor. It controls the temperature of the circulating water, which in turn affects the motor block and the heater. If the thermostat is ok, you might have him check the heater core. A plugged core can cause the system to malfunction, but you would most likely have a leak. good luck

Heater works when driving car but not when at an idle

I'm assuming the heater blower motor does not stop working, but that the heater output temperature drops. Two possibilities: 1) Coolant level is low, 2) some type of blockage is allowing engine coolant to circulate only at higher rpm. Check the coolant level. If it's ok and this is an older vehicle that has never had the coolant system flushed, there may be buildup in the system that blocks circulation in the heater core.

I need to install a block heater in my 97 ford escort LX. What type of block heater do I need and are there instructions on how to install it?

A block heater usually is installed in place of a freeze plug. I have seen some that go into the lower radiator hose.... Be sure to pressure test the system when you finish.

Can an engine block heater be installed in a 1997 Cadillac Catera and if so how. If a block heater cannot be installed can an inline tank type heater be installed?

the answer is yes, it can be installed into the block by removing one of the side core/freeze plugs, this is a dirty messy job, if u can afford it have a shop intall it. see picture of block heater below
