First thing to do is turn the engine manually using a wrench on the front of the crankshaft to ensure the engine will actually turn at least two full revolutions before asking an assistant to turn the key while you watch.

The engine might have seized and might be terminally damaged. You need to take investigation and rectification a step at a time.

Vernon your help is very appreciated, what steps do I take if motor turns over

Vernon is there any reason for oil to have leaked in the upperrear of motor

  • Vernon Taylor Jan 04, 2017

A thoroughly overheated engine suffers from all manner of maladies - seal damage, gasket damage, weakened valve springs and piston rings, metal distortion, metal cracks, piston, camshaft and/or piston seizure (temporary or permanent). The latter often causes incorrect valve timing and bent valves. Some oil leakage is fairly usual...

If the engine turns by hand, it will probably turn on the starter unless there is another problem there. Each aspect of the above must be checked systematically, including the original cause of the overheating. First gather the information and then check the budget and then make the decision whether to repair or replace.

2003 toyota camry 4cyl.engine doesnt turn over but starter does.starter ck. and is ok , just makes starter whining noise

if starter motor runs (hear it??) but doesn't turn engine , then it needs to be replaced also at same time , the gear it contacts with on flywheel edge ,needs to be visually inspected (easy with starter removed) for any missing or bent teeth , as a engine this old is bound to have some worn or missing teeth, if gear is missing teeth or are very worn (teeth looks like a shark fin with hook to them) then engine and transmission will need to be separated to be replace the gear , most shops will just remove engine to allow for this , but this isn't always nessacary

When I start my 1996 Toyota Camry, after it turns over, it makes a "pinging" sound. Is it the starter?

If it only happens when while cranking its possible that the starter gear is failing to engage with the flywheel all the way. Have the starter tested. If the pinging sound comes after you release the key from the cranking position it is still possible that the starter solenoid is having issues or the spring for the starter gear is bad, Either way I would have the starter tested. Worst case is the teeth on the flywheel are toast.

I replaced the starter on a 1994 toyota camry. Everything appears to be reconnected correctly, but all I can year when I turn the key is the sound of the starter turning. I assume it isn't engaging...

when the ignition switch is turned to the starting postion the motor should turn over if it dont then the starter is either not installed properly or the starter drive is sticking or bad if the starter is not engaging with the flywheel there could be a good chance that the teeth on the flywheel are broke off. i would pull the starter back off and use a mirror to check the teeth on the flywheel.

91 camry(4cyl, 5 sp) wont turn over. It has power but wont engage starter. Tried cleaning battery, new battery, new starter, changing starter relay-no joy. Was intermitant, now constant. Light tester...

By the sound of it. Can you check the Starter Fuse if its still good. you can visually check this by simply taking out the fuse and inspecting if the fillament is still whole. Any breaks in the filament would mean a dead fuse. To find out which fuse to check look at the underside of the fuse box cover and there should be a diagram.

Another potential problem would be the ignition switch. if thats the case there are a lot of ways to go about this but the cheapest way is to simply create a new lead to the starter and add in a push button switch (if done right it would look really cool since most exotic cars are actually started with a push of a button rather than a turn of the key)

Started motor problems on Toyota Camry 2000

You need a new starter bendix, or a whole starter. Best do it soon before you tear the teeth of the flex plate. Once you do that you have to pull the transmission to change it.

Starting problem

Hello LostLynne.
The most common issue is a bad contact in the starter solenoid.
This solenoid is part of the starter assembly and makes the high amperage battery to starter connection
When you hear the click the solenoid is activating but not completing the battery to starter contact.
If this is an original starter or been on for a long time I would suggest changing the starter assembly.
Also in your under hood fuse/relay panel there is a smaller relay that activates the starter solenoid that should be checked before replacing the starter. Although less common for that to happen it does occasionally cause a problem. Easy to replace too.
If you have further questions please ask me.
