SOURCE: Timing belt

your best bet if your not familiar with timing belts you might want to have somone more experienced install it for you a job that may cost you a 150.00 to 200.00 could end up costing you a engine timing a motor can be complicated depending on vehicle it is very easy to **** a valve ruin a camshaft, etc those marks need to be right alot of times when you get your marks aligned then you put the tensioner they move and if your not aware could cost you but if you are willing to try your better off getting a illustrated book step by step like haynes or chilton for your year car it will give you step by step and give you cautionsto look for

1988 Toyota tercel. How do I change timing belt?

Yes, you do. Also be sure and set the engine at TDC of compression stroke of # 1 cylinder. Remove crank bolt and pulley, remove timing cover...you may also have to remove the front engine mount to get the cover off. Use a jack and a piece of wood under the oil pan to hold the engine up.

Is there a timing belt or gear on a 1986 toyota tercel

Timing belt for sure.If there is a plastic cover on the front of the engine behind the drive belts then its a timing belt and not a chain.
hope this helps,

I need but cant find a Chilton manual for my 1995 tercel. All I find are up to 1994. 1995 was the first year of the fifth generation Tercel so I doubt 94 would work. I need to find something so I can...

I only found a front crankshaft seal replacement not the whole crankshaft: Front Crankshaft Seal REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION 1.5L (5E-FE) Engine Tercel NOTE: The front oil seal can be removed from the engine without removing the oil pump.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2. Remove the front covers and the timing belt.
  3. Remove the crankshaft timing belt sprocket. WARNING
When removing the front seal, be extremely careful not to damage the crankshaft.
  4. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.
  5. Tape the end of a flat bladed tool to avoid damaging crankshaft. Pry out the oil seal using the taped end of the tool.
  6. Inspect the oil seal riding surface on the crankshaft for signs of wear or damage. To install:
  7. Wipe the seal bore with a clean rag.
  8. Apply multipurpose grease the lip of a new oil seal.
  9. Drive the oil seal into place using tool SST 09309–37010 or an equivalent seal installer tool. Make sure the seal surface is flush with the oil pump case edge. Work from the front of the cover. Be extremely careful not to damage the seal.
  10. Install the sprocket without disturbing the Woodruff key.
  11. Install the timing belt and front covers.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks

60,000 miles, water pump not driven by timing belt' replace idler pulley's and not bad idea to replace crank and camshaft seals.

Both are located under the timing cover.you will have to remove the timing sproket to get to the CrankshaftPS. be careful to notice how you removed it. the sproket have to be reinstalled exactly the same way you removed it.

1995 to 1999 Tercel Service/Repair Manual

1995 to 1997 tercel? no repair manual sold. noy by chilton or haynes. there's supposed to be a detailed manual by toyota, sold only to repair shops, hard to get and it costs hundreds. definitely not any download version i've ever heard of.
1996 was before corporations were really into downloadable anything.
