how many miles on this 4Liter, XJ
    50k, 500k?
how many miles (years) since, new spark plugs.?(or a real tuneup, filters sparks)
    skip the 60k mile tuneup"?
run fine after the keep foot on gas, deal>?
as in. you can drive ok.????
if yes, does engine, get fully hot. 180f>
if yes are hot restarts easy ?
if starts are poor, only ! after long park.
then it consider in injector leaking.

and back the the CEL lamp
    is CEL glowing running??
eaCH key on, CEL glows, it must...
start engine, CEL goes out, it must if engine
    stays running, does it?

or you can't ever keep it running,?
say to drive, if you can drive, does the CEL stay, out,
if the CEL glows, that mean you must scan it
to see why its glows. on all cars 96 to now
    USA< same answer.
As can see all I have are question, due to
    I cant drive it.
stalls have many causes, over 50 in fact.
every thing it does correct and wrong
    tells a far better picture,
something your mech will see in short time.

the only thing I can say is the ASD relay is
not dropping out, if hot footing works.
The PCM can drop "ASD" relay for 8 reasons.
    so it's not those.
    those are:
1: bad spark. (a basic tuneup works most times)
2: bad fueling, too rich, too lean or flooding, one can example spark plug tips and learn most of this, (100 year methods still work here)
3: on old engine, bad engine, dead or weak cylinders, lots of causes. huge list.
    compression test finds most.

Indicates that the idle circuit or system is not operating as designed .
could be a sensor fault
best have the fault codes read to find the area of the problem

the idle controls can not control idle
if the engine has gross misfiring,
called out of its command authority.
    nor did he scan it.

Ever get a full tuneup this decade?
did you.
1: check oil levels.
2: check fuses.
3: hot foot keeps it running eacy? , no misfire can be ISC stuck closed. clean it?
4: hot foot (right) keeps it running but is hard to do, and misfires. it is misfiring, and all ISC's can fail (perfect) with gross misfiring.
Even stuck open EGR cause gross rpm drop and worse misfire... 400 RPM,it can be this...
so back to misfiring, and not idle controls, see?
misfire has 50 causes, need a list? lol
but #1 for 100 years now, is not getting the tuneup.
as stated in the operators guide. see that page,.
the 60k mile tune up is very important , skipping it , you land just where you are now, for 100 years, same deal. on cars ignored.
we cant hear it and if we could , bingo.

why ask the deaf and blind to guess, ?
sport?

Jeep 2002 grand cherokee dies unless i keep foot on the gas...

The idle relearn needs reset. Keep your foot on the gas at about 900 rpm. Make it idle for about 5-6 minutes. Slowly ease up on the gas until it will idle on it's own, it might take a while. After you get it to idle, it might be idling real low, but on its own, Let it sit and idle until for 20 minutes. After that it should be back to normal. You will have to do this every time you have the battery unhooked for a while.

does your jeep run rough? idle is real low? and when you are driving and push the gas hard it doesnt want to move? if so it is most likely the mass air flow sensor. i had to replace that 2 or 3 times on my 1999 jeep cherokee

Jeep won't start

what generally happens with jeeps. is the idle air control valve loses memory of its idle position. try starting the vehicle with your foot slightly on the gas pedal. if it starts your going to have to keep it running by keeping your foot on the gas until it relearns its position and runs by itself. also there is a possibility that one of the modules locked up. if my first suggestion doesnt work then disconnect the negative batt cable for 30 seconds reconnect and then try to start it

A faulty gas cap can cause the sensor to come on.
Clean out the throttle body with a cleaner and see if the idle improves.

Where is the gas leaking from? To clear a flooded engine, keep your foot all the way down on the gas pedal while you try to start the car. As it starts keep holding until it sounds like it's smothing out then slowly release. You can also change the spark plugs if that does not work.
