Possibilities are defective spark plug, weak or no spark, too little or too much fuel, no injection at all, intake air leak, compression leak...

How to set camshaft timing


you should have bought a Chilton or Haynes manual. most cars and trucks are all different and have a set way to set them. if you broke the chain or belt and bent a valve. you will need to do expensive repairs pulling the heads to change valves. not sure what car you have or why you pulled the timing off. so I cant be sure what to tell you.

check compression on each cylinder, if u have zero clearance on those valves u may need to replace the head or have a valve job

Take out the spark plugs. Put your finger over the #1 cylinder spark plug hole and turn the engine over with a socket on the front crank pulley. When pressure starts to push your finger out of the watch for the timing mark on the pulley and stop turning when the mark lines up with the zero mark .

Mark the spark plug wires for the cylinder number using a short piece of masking tape on each wire. Remove all the spark plugs using the spark plug wrench. The engine will be easier to turn by hand with the spark plugs removed and it's a good time to replace them if required. Remove the valve cover from over the number one cylinder. On a V-block engine this is normally the valve cover on the driver's side. On in-line engines the number one cylinder is the one closest to the front of the car. Check your vehicle's specifications to be sure which cylinder is number one.

Rotate the engine clockwise and observe the valves on the number one cylinder. When both valves are in the up position, insert a screwdriver into the number one cylinder through the spark plug hole. Rotate the engine very slowly back and forth until the screwdriver is at the maximum height. This indicates the number one cylinder is at Top Dead Center or "TDC" on the compression stroke.

Locate the number one spark plug wire on distributor cap and make a tic-mark of this position with a marker pen on the distributor housing. Remove the distributor cap and observe the position of the rotor.

Loosen the distributor hold down bolt and turn distributor until the rotor is lined up with the mark you made in Step 3. Your timing is now set to zero degrees of mechanical timing.

Replace the valve cover using a new gasket. Replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires using the marks from Step 1. You may want to mark the harmonic balancer with a zero point referenced to a fixed point on the engine. A fixed point could be a bolt head or accessory bracket that does not move when the engine is running. Later on this mark can be used as an indicator for stroboscopic timing.

Connect a vacuum gauge to a manifold vacuum source. Most engines will have a port at the base of the carburetor or throttle body where a gauge can be connected. Start the engine and observe the vacuum gauge reading.

Turn the distributor until the maximum vacuum gauge reading is noted. Back off one inch of vacuum from the maximum reading. Tighten the distributor hold down bolt. Normal readings average from 14 to 21 inches of vacuum depending on the condition of the engine.

Test drive the vehicle and listen for pinging noises. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 if excessive pinging is heard, or if there is a significant loss of power. The timing is correct when the vehicle operates at maximum power without the engine hard starting, backfiring, or pinging on acceleration.

Is this a four cylinder engine?
If it is, and you are starting from lining up the crank pulley to the zero degrees mark, and then finding the rotor pointing to number 4, you may be on the exhaust stroke of number 1. You know, if you turn the crankshaft one revolution, around to same spot on the crank, the rotor will now be pointing to #1? That's if it is a four cylinder.
Has the distributor been pulled out of the engine block and put back in? Don't know what you are trying to do exactly, but if the distributor has not been disturbed, and its a four cylinder engine, turn the crank one revolution, line up the notch or mark on the crank pulley, and check that rotor is now pointing to number one.

on a proper TDC timed dead Compression your harmonic damper has a mark that tells you such Zero status is alighned with a mark on the motor or plastic cover it puts you to perfect timeing

What are the timing gear specifications for 1992 Honda Accord 2.2L. am replacing the timing belt and gear & need to align timing marks. thanks


manualy turn the engine over to the first cylinder. (place screwdriver in cylinder through spark plug hole) when the pistion is all the way up that is top of cylinder #1 . at this point ther should be marks on the gears and on the block that align. if not than mark them your self with a paint marker. now loosen the tensioner to remove belt, and install new belt. be careful that all marks are still aligned that is a zero clerance engine. meaning that being one tooth off will colaps a valve.

This is the same as a Ford Escort 1.9, the #1 cylinder should be all the way up. To confirm- the crak shift mark should be on zero which is Crank Shift Center- THe camshift sproket should align with the headmark. Make sure both marks don't move. Align the belt- not too tight , not to loose

TIMING PROBLEM


I dont think that u have a timing probing but just to be sure I would recheck the timing, (remove timing belt cover, set crank to zero and make sure both cams line up with the marks on the engine) if thats all good the u have a prob with that particular cylinder. first thing I would do is swap the coil pack from cyl 3 with another cylinder (like cyl 1) then start the car if the misfire code goes from P0303 (Cyl 3) to P0301 (Cyl 1) then u know u have a bad coil pack. try that and let me know what happens
