Sounds like the timing belt has jumped some teeth. that pop you hear is detonation as the cylinder is firing while the piston is on it's way up.
Easy check, pull N°1 spark plugs out, put the puston on TDC, open rotor cap , ing rotor should be pointing directly to the spark plug wire going to theN° 1 piston plug.. if not , like the man said timing belt skip, but if not to far off loosing the distributor to line up , piston on N°1cylinder up on TDC, pull dist cap ,Ing Rotor pointing to N°1plug wire..good luck let me know
Certainly check the valve timing but be aware when a car grows older it can sometimes seem like the engine management has developed a bad mood and dumped a load of fuel into the engine and flooded it. Continuing to try to start it just makes matters worse.
I have encountered about a dozen such examples and removing the spark plugs and walking away for a couple of hours has done the trick. Sometimes constant cranking with the throttle held wide open has worked and disabling the fuel pump and then cranking with a wide throttle works better.
Remebering to open the throttle a little before starting prevents any further trouble.
Be also aware of the possibility of tappet jacking on models with hydraulic tappets. I have encounter this condition several times where an abnormally high cold engine oil pressure causes the valves to open slightly - the engine seems to start normally but runs for perhaps only a second and then dies and won't restart.
SOURCE: 97 escort 2.0 will not start replaced CPS ,IGN Coil, have spark but no start
have u replaced the cam/crank sensor?
SOURCE: 2001 honda civic ex,wont start, no injector pulse,
Injector pulses are sent from the engines computer. Have that checked out
SOURCE: compression are all @120psi, new timing belt .all
Do you have fuel pressure?
Have you tried spraying carb spray into the intake while cranking the engine over to see if it starts?
If it does than you have a fuel issue.

SOURCE: 92 Ford Escort LX Won't Start, Shows Fuel Cutout Light Upon Cranking Engine
cut off switch could still be bad. First my sure gas is getting to the engine....if so then this indicates that fuel system is working properly. Sounds like car may not be firering. Things that could cause this is coil bad, ingnition modual failed or maybe pickup coil."sensor maybe some where..timing out which would indicate timing belt or chain or gears are broke......Keep in mind these are just some things that could cause your problem and gives you ideal what to look for........hope this info helps and good luck....Please rate this post and if you need more help then fill free to contact me and we will try to get ya back on the road......
