Question about Cars & Trucks

My Optimus oscillating heater works for about 10mins and then overheats causing it to shut off. It shouldn't be overheating in my beyond cold living room.

I got the heater for Christmas. My ordered off fingerhut. I can hear the fan. It heats up and sounds normal with a low fan sound. Doesn't last long before the caution light pops on and heater shuts off. It does come with a remote.

Did it ever really heat up? -- Does it have a hi and low speed setting?-- Will it run on high speed? When it does run, do you feel much heat coming out of the open spaces? Does the Oscillating work when it starts? Mack

It never actually heated the entire room. The oscillating part works and now that I have looked the low setting works as well. It only has a low and high setting. On high it switches off after a few minutes. On low it barely warms up the surrounding area.

  • Mack Baxter Jan 03, 2017

Well, we are making progress-- So-- it will keep running, if you set it on
low-- (am I correct?)-- But on High, it shuts off after a few minutes--
(Right?)-- It sounds like a temperature limit of some sort is shutting it off.
Question:-- If you leave it on, and plugged in, when it stops-- will
it later turn back on? (Maybe even 30 minutes later)-- when you put your
hand on it, and it is no longer warm?
Another question: Is there any little indicator light anywhere, that
let's you know if you are plugged in to the wall outlet? (And thus-- you
have power at the heater?)-- Does that light stay on all the time, even
    when the fan shuts off?
Another test: If you unplug it, when it shuts off, and plug it in a
few minutes later, will the fan come on, and heat come out with the moving air?

Not enough air flow threw the coils. Bad heat sink. You can get heat sinks almost anywhere the is an electronic store. Do not by pass the heat sink, you may not have a cold living room /house to return to.

Let's see if we can figure this out together-- Here are a few questions we need to know to start trouble-shooting:
How old is the unit?-- Is it a Pedestal or Floor Mount unit-- or one of the newer TOWER models?
Some have remote Temperature sensors-- does your?
Can you hear the fan running-- does it sound like it did when it was new? When it first turns on, is the heat coming out, nice and warm?-- and is the fan nicely pushing the heat out?

Let me know, and we will advance to the next step-- Mack

How do you know if the heater core is bad in a 92 chevy caprice

What does the temp. gauge show when the antifreeze bubbles out?

I assume the coolant level is up when the overheat happens?

A heater core shouldn't cause overheating unless it has leaked out enough coolant...

If the car had a bad overheat you might have a bad head gasket. A shop with a gas analyzer can check your coolant to see if there are excessive hydrocarbons - telltale signs of internal engine issues...

I have written a tip on this.
You may have a couple of problems. I would first replace the thermostat, and make sure you have the proper coolant(ant-freeze) level.
Please let me know how it goes and if you need further help I am here.

Overheating

Generally when the heater isn't heating anything and putting out cold air the heater core is bad. I have never worked on a BMW before and have never heard of a heater core causeing overheating, but because they are linked, it maybe a clog in the core causing poor coolant circulation.
