Question about Cadillac Catera
A lot of GM vehicles have a safety feature built into the AC compressors. When the compressor senses an unsafe condition (lack of refrigerant) it will shut down completely. Sometimes you will see an error message inside the car indicating an AC problem. To reset the compressor, you can disconnect the negative battery cable for 20minutes. Upon reconnecting, the compressor will reset. You should have the recharge hose connected with a can of R-134A ready to go. Then start the car, turn the AC on high and recharge the system. You may need more than 1 can. If frost begins to form on the AC lines, you've successfully recharged the system and no more refrigerant is needed. It's very important not to overfill the system as this will damage the compressor and not provide any chilled air. Also note that disconnecting the battery will reset your stereo. If a code is needed to setup the stereo upon reset, you should have the code handy. Best of luck and post back with any questions.

Thanks for contacting Fixya.com
More than likely it is a freon issue. When you turn your AC on you should be able to hear the condensor kick on. If not you might have condensor issues but I would say 90% of the time it is from not enough freon.
The most probable cause is that you have a leak in your A/C system..and it needs to be serviced with R134A and a can of red dye added so the leak can be found
Good luck and God Bless
