If none of the troubleshooting that Mikey mentioned works it could be that the horizontal lines that defrost your rear windshield could be damaged.

Rear defroster only half working

My 1999 Buick Ultra rear defroster stopped working. The heated driver side mirrow still works and the light on the panel still lights up. What do you suggest doing? Both heated seats still work.


I just accessed mine. It is under the rear seat. You just lift up on the seat, and it pops right out. If you are having problems with the rear defroster, it could very likely be the control module. This is a combination module which the rear antenna, and the defroster grid plugs in to.
When mine went out I smelled a "burnt wire" smell, then it went out.
To access the module, sit in the back seat, drivers side. There is a trim panel that will be by your left ear as you are looking forward. It is the panel that flares down from the ceiling to the rear deck. Gently pull at the edge of this panel, working around the edges, and the small strip which continues over the top of the door.
The seatbelt goes through this panel, so it will be hanging from the seatbelt at this point. There is a ~3" square, black module with the defroster input and output wires, and the antenna wire plugged into it.
You just unplug the wires, pull the one mounting screw, and voila!
On mine the module was obviously melted, as was the wire going into it. I got the replacement from a salvage yard, as the new one was over $50, and the replacement wire was $18. The salvage yard was unable to look it up, so I had to go out to the yard with them and pull it myself. The final cost was $17 (they tried to charge me $40, and I told them I could get it online for that, and they dropped the price).
You can use a crimp on **** connector to put in the replacement wire, but because of the heat in that area I chose to solder the wires together.
BTW, this module fits a wide range of Buicks, and full size Olds.

The defroster only works occasionally, and only for a minute before stopping. It appears there is a short somewhere. My mechanic can not make heads or tails of the sea of wires beneath the dashboard. what...


During the restoration of our '92 Lesabre, we had an auto glass guy come out to remove & hopefully replace the same glass in the rear window section(the window trim had disintegrated and we bought new stuff to replace it with, but it wouldn't fit unless the window was removed).
What was discovered when the window was removed... was that the defroster interface on the sides of the glass was basically disconnected from the glass: the solder contact patch where the power & ground wires interfaced with the defrosting wires was corroded. It fell off once it was pulled on. In our case we had the whole rear window replaced.

What may be possible for you to do is pull back/off the rear pillar trim that covers the defrost wire & connectors and re-melt the solder with a 80-150 watt soldering iron(assuming that is where the problem is). I suppose, before buying and/or firing up the soldering iron, get the rear trim that covers the left & right edges of the rear-glass removed to find out IF the connectors & the long vertical strip they attach to are indeed attached to or detached from the glass. Oh duh, the vertical strip that the power wires connect to on either side run from top to bottom of the defroster array and are the portions that solder to the glass.

If it results in soldering, I'd suggest you use either a resin/flux core electrical solder or use a flux paste brushed over the solder contact areas & use solid electrical solder.

If I wasn't so busy with other parts of the car I would have gone after the soldering myself... but being as pre-occupied as I was that's why we opted to have the whole window(which includes the defrosting array & connectors) replaced.

Rear defroster doesn't work.


rear defrosters are an apllied film of semi metalic strips and if you get you windows tinted often the tint man accidentally nicks these strips cuasing the defroster to malfuction check for breaks in the srips

Hi i have a land rover freelander 00.back door wont open or tailgate windoe wont go down,the rest of the doors work. help


try a hard restart, if that doesnt work then you need a new rear window motor. for the hard restart all you have to do is disconnect the battery cables and touch the positive and negative together for about 8 seconds. if that fails then a new motor it is.

first thing fuse is ok yes? switch light works ? when on ? go to the boot /hatch and lift open on the bottom of door/hatch you may find contacts elec ? and if so these contact other contacts on lower cross panel the door closes onto ? these sometimes get dirty/corroded ? or stick down try rust freeing fluid and clean contacts this may work? if not then use a voltmeter and check power supply from switch to rear screen? hope this helps?

Daytime running light/blower motor interaction


I have the same problem. I've heard the ignition switch harness is shorting out and replacing the ignition switch ($75-$125 part) will fix it. A few torx drivers and sockets are needed to replace it (a 4mm hex socket works for the column covers, but the bolts holding the ignition switch in are even smaller. I have it apart down to where I need a smaller torx socket to continue.)
