what's up led, the large viscous nut is loosened in the clockwise direction. after you remove the 4 nuts on the water pump, you should see one hole on each side of the water pump body. if you take 2 bolts out of the thermostat housing, you can use those to thread in the pump body holes.slowly tighten each bolt equally and the pump should come out. to install a new pump, lubricate the o-ring on the new pump and just push in by hand.

I have had this problem many times. I have always had to take the clamp off the drive axle boot near the transmission and take it apart there. I have never been able to get one off that did not pop off easy even after I had the transmission out. You just have to reuse the part that is stuck on the transmission and get a new clamp to re clamp the drive axle together. If you have any more questions feel free to ask and Ill do my best to answer them.

ON some water pumps there are bolts under the pulley and on others there are bolts coming in from the back (pump offset to the block) As you have not mentioned the make and engine ,the next best idea is to get a workshop manual and that will show the water pump removal procedure.
