SOURCE: Both of my belts broke this morning

I can give you step by step instructions if you want, but they will be generic, if you can follow them it will help you. Every belt has something that keeps the tension correct, most newer cars have spring loaded idler pulleys. Some still have mechanical adjustment made to set the tension, Like a slot and a bolt. on the alternator or a bolt that moves it each way by screwing it in or out. If your car still has the diagram for your belts under the hood you can identify how they should be installed. this is a ten minute job at most and it is easy if you want to attempt it, My help is totally free and just want to help you. you can message me anytime or even call me if you want to waste a

SOURCE: Serpentine belt on Olds 97 Bravada

I would suspect a bad 'tensioner' pulley. When you get the new belt on, try to pull up on the uppermost part of the belt by hand - if it moves you should replace the tensioner (as this is what 'holds' your belt on). I can't seem to find a routing diagram so if it's not on a sticker under the hood or in your owner's manual try the local GM dealer...they have to have one. Good luck!.

SOURCE: The serpentine belt broke replaced it and i broke

I had this problem, it turned out that A/C compressor had seized and wouldn't turn, because the compressor was stuck it would rip up the new belt- so you can one of two things;

replace the compressor and belt

get a shorter serpentine belt and bypass the A/C compressor- there are several sites that show you how to route this.- i did this being a college student, not having A/C isn't that bad

The Timing belt broke on my 1995 mercury mystique I was looking for a manuel to fix it. thank you

This can be a big problem if it is a Non Interferrance Motor, meaning that when your timing belt broke you engine basically free wheeled during slow down. This can bend the intake and exhaust valves, extended cranking on motor trying to get it to start after the belt breaks can also cause this. You can get a Chiltons manual to have a guide in replacing the timing belt, i can say i know the motor in your car is a dual over head cam engine. These can be a little more difficult to do if you have never replaced a timing belt. May be best to take it to a professional that can test the head and make sure that no valves are bent before you pay for the belt and timing tensioner.

I have a 2005 Honda Civic EX Special Edition with 88K. At how many miles should I replace the timing belt?

i recommend replacing a timing belt at 90.000 miles your dealer is most likely to tell you the same thing. you really do not want it to break while driving it.depending on the motor you have,if it has O clearance on the valves. i'm not sure what size your motor is. most honda cars have O clearance on the cam shaft. that means in laymans terms, if the belt breaks while the vehicles moving, the valves will be crushed. that's a whole lot of money. if you bought your car new your handbook should tell you at what mileage what certain services your due for. i know there are 90.000 mile services and also 100.000 mile service. suggest you check with your local honda dealer just to be sure. thank you for choosing we're here to assist you anyway we can!

Serpentine belt broke on a 2005 Toyota Matrix. There is no belt schematic under the hood or in the owners manual. Is there anywhere to get a belt schematic for this car.

go to or just go to toyota site, and i'm sure you will find the answer. If all else go to the toyota dealer and ask them for a print out of the routing. BEWARE, i dont know for sure if that motor has a 0 tolerance valve position. meaning that if the belt broke and the motor was running which made a rotation it is possible that the pistons made contact with valves and caused damage(bent valves) before starting that motor you need to check sources or rotate motor by hand for any resistance (do not force) ask dealer for information on possible damage that could have occured, Go to local auto parts and look in a repair manual for a diagram also. best of luck, my 2002 and 2004 pontiac/ford both had belt problems which bent valves and had to repair. I can fix all these myself, parts cost. but if you have it done, pull out the piggy bank and hopefully you filled with quarters not pennies.

In a 2001 2liter Kia the timing belt broke.. Can I just replace it or do I need to have the valves checked first.? I heard that Kia fixed that problem of bending valves in this model.

Although a KIA manual will state that this is an interference engine, it is not. I know because I have replaced a shredded timing belt on my used 2000 Sportage to take it home and it ran great. Just recently, the timing idler pulley bolt broke while I was driving causing the belt to come off. I replaced the tensioner pulley and drilled out and re-tapped the idler bolt hole and installed the new idler and the belt (it was only 2 months old at the time) and it runs great again. THESE ARE NOT INTERFERENCE ENGINES!!!! you don't have to tear down the top end of the engine to inspect for any damage and it is very simple to install a timing belt on this motor as long as it is done properly.

Timing belt is broken. Interference or non interference motor?

Most Ford vehicles from 1985 and up have enough valve clearence so the valves do not get hit when the timing belt snaps. Since I worked for ford for many years I have only seen one with valve damage and the youg man said he was driving his car really hard at high RPM's. I believe you will be okay on your engine as long as when the belt broke the engine was not at high rpm's. If know one has told you those engine recommend a timing belt replacement every 60k. I hpe this helped and I hope this fixes your problem. Good luck, Roger

Hey Mj, you seem to know your stuff--it sounds like the drive belt broke. You can get a repair manual on amazon for approx. $15 plus shipping. It would be a great help w/ pictures and how to maintain and fix the scooter. But if you're going to dump it, u probably shouldn't invest in it. I don't know the exact model you have, but belts seem to run $20 and up. Unfortunately I don't know how difficult it is to replace. I'm sure it"s a $100 fix @ the shop.
Good Luck! countrycurt0
