Question about Peugeot 504

Peugeot 504 petrol engine runs erratically at idle then dies after 5 to 10 minutes. I have checked mechanical timing and tried the spare ignition coil with no change. Any ideas as to possible causes?

I had a similar problem 6 months ago. Discovered the distributor drive shaft was one tooth out of position. Ran great till yesterday. Could a faulty distributor capacitor explain symptoms?

Carry out a compression check on all cylinders to see if thats shows a fault. If its nil or low, check valve clearances and then head gasket.

Engine died while driving, no spark, replaced coil, now starts, idles, runs well at low rpm, but misfires when accelerating. No check engine costs thrown. What should I check next.


Change your ignition module. The distributor is a weak point of the Honda, I will always change out the whole thing than just try the coil.

sounds like you have a vacuum leak spray some carb cleaner around the motor when it changes idle you are getting close to the leak put something on the fenders it will take off the paint if you do not feel safe will carb cleaner you can use water but use light mist to much water it very very bad. most likely it is the hose that goes to the power brake or the plastic connection from the motor that the last thing people check after spending to much money trying to fix the problem

check for ghost codes, the light does not need to be on to have codes stored. I would also check your vacuum lines as these can have strange impacts on a idle. check you pcv valve to make sure it is working proper

What engine do you have? You could still hear your fuel pump running but if you haven't checked the fuel pressure you may still have a problem with your fuel pump. You should be around 38 to 44 PSI when key is turned on not running. Did you verify you are getting spark or is there nothing to the plugs? Your ignition coil resistance should be (cold 9000-15,400 ohms) Primary should be .36-.55.
Your pickup coil resistance depending whether you are California or excluding California
California is
cold- pick up coil terminals G1 & G- Ohms 125-200
cold-Pick up coil terminals G2 & G- Ohms 125-200
cold-Pick up Coil terminals NE & G- Ohms 155-250
Ex. California models
cold-Pick up coil terminals G+ & G- Ohms 185-275
Cold-Pick up coil terminals NE+ & NE- Ohms 370-550 ohms
You also need to check air gap between PIck-up Coil & Signal rotor
California is .008-.020
Except California .008-.016

*Ensure proper spark exists from ignition system
*Ensure Fuel system performs properly (fuel pump, Fuel filter, Fuel injectors, fuel pressure regulator).
*Check engine compression, valve clearance, valve timing and timing belt (if equipped)
Check airflow meter or MAP sensor and wiring
*Check idle air control valve (if equipped) and wiring.
*Check circuit opening relay and EFI main relay.
*Check STA signal at Engine Control Modual (ECM)
*Check Engine Control Modual (ECM) and wiring.
