How do i fix ford xf sticky accelerator

I have a 86 ford xf carby today my car while driving started to rev really high so i pulled ova n turnd it out as it was reving very hard found that the cable on top had come off the top i put it back in n now sits out alot from were it connects to and car constantaly revs hard how do i fix

I suspect there should be a spring to return the throttle lever to the idle position. Without the spring, the throttle plate will stay open and allow the engine to run at high rpm.

Engine revs up by itself & then down so low it dies. 86 ford taurus v4 manual


Sound like an airflow issue. But not sure if that car has a mass air flow sensor. Clean intake with carb cleaner or seafoam. I use seafoam for these issues. on throttle body unplug largest hose that has suction when running pour very slowly 6 oz seafoam into funnel connected with hose then shut car off let sit 15-30 minutes then in an open area run the car for 10 minutes revving engine to clean out the carbon. Then drive high acceleration 55+ for 10-20 miles or until smoke clears from tail pipe.

When applying pressure to accelerator, it sometimes "sticks", revs REALLY high and the car har no power to the accelerator - have to pull over, turn off vehicle and restart...???


pull diagnostic trouble codes and post back, sounds like it could be a problem with tps or app sensors, assuming this is a drive by wire and not a cable driven system

check for a blown fuse, and check your battery cables to see that they are properly conected to the starter.

I have 305 4 barrel in my 86 oldsmobile cutlass supreme, Im thinking there is something wrong with my choke. Sometimes it idles great when it runs for a while but when I took it for a drive up the road...


First inspect choke linkage to see if it is binding or sticking closed when engine is warm. You can spray with WD-40 to help it work more freely. If the carb has a round plastic housing over the choke spring check to see if it has three rivets holding it in place. If it has screws you can loosen the screws and turn the housing slightly to put less tension on the choke butterfly. If it has rivets, drill them out and replace with screws that fit the holes. In the summertime you can probably set a Q-jet carb all the way lean and still have enough fuel to start cold with a couple pumps on the throttle.

i think ur tranny started sliping then after reving it high, u must have over heated the motor causing it to puke out some coolant.

My 84 ford falcon with auto trans was revving very high while idling now it does rev at all while idling im not used to an electric choke


You were a bit vague in your problem ( now it does rev at all while idlling) Did you mean it doesn't rev at all now, Answer: 1st check all vacuum hoses from brake booster to carby if one of these has come off it will cause it to rev high, Do this before playing with your choke or carby. also check to see if the Carby is bolted onto the manifold tightly as they can rattle loose causing a vacuum leak there. Have you touched anything before this problem occured?

if the fitting is brass or alumonium, the fitting is probably corroded in, and removal will probably snapit. good luck !
