Question about 2008 Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

My dtr stopped at a traffic lite in her 2008 RAV4, when she gave it gas, it made a loud grinding noise, we had it towed to a mech. Her axle is broken. Is there a known defect that would cause this?

Well, probably not.
Since the early 1980's, most cars now have front wheel drives, which include 2 short drive shafts, and each one of those has 2 CV joints, one at each end.
Any one of those four CV joints can break anytime.
A new or rebuilt axle/cv joint set is usually good for about 80-K miles.
Other than regular inspections by a mechanic ( for example, twice a year), the only other precaution to take to eliminate breakdown such as your dtr had would be to have her learn to listen for sounds of problems with the car.
This might mean to turn off the radio, turn off the A/C, roll down all the windows, and be in the car by yourself with no one to talk to, and listen for unusual noises.
A problem here is, if you have not been doing this, you would not know what to listen for!
God bless your efforts.

SOURCE: front drive train or axles?

Welcome to fixya

could be one of those but lets hope not it could also be the front bearings if it is the bearings it runs around 300 to fix if it is drive train or axles your talking a lot more money

OH check the break pads just thought of that if the pads are low it will make a noise to pull wheels off and check breaks first

hope this helps you out have a good day :)

SOURCE: cv axle

Probably the wheel bering. If your going down the road and turn to the passenger side and it gets worse, its the drivers side bering and visa versa.

SOURCE: Brakes are making loud grinding noise when slowing down to stop or on an incline

Ok, it could be a few things, 1. bad break caliper. 2. if you have ceramic breaks, it could be a cracked brake pad, and if they are not ceramic they can still be cracked. 3. if you drive a lot then it could be that you need new breaks again.. 4. also have your back breaks checked along with the front ones..

Mr car is making a loud metal grinding noise when put in gear to go forward what's wrong

You could have broken the axle shaft. It can break in the cv joint and just spin or on some models the axle splines can strip out of the axle hub. The car usually won't move or it can move only a little and then stop with grinding noise.

2008 Silverado Z71 grinding noise in 4 wheel high - what is the cause

Could be the axle trying to engage or it could be in the transfer case. Suggest you put it on stands all around and have some one listen underneath for exact location while engaging it.

Grinding Like Noise...

Axles don't grind, they have more of a popping or
snapping sound.
Axles get replaced when the rubber boots tear &
water gets into the joints or the joints are making a
noise, as well as feel loose

I would hope the brakes were removed so the wheel
hub bearings could be felt for roughness when the axles
were out

I suspect that is your noise

Do both sides if that is the case.

The other possibility is worn transaxle differential
bearings. I am guessing you have an automatic

If you have a standard shift then there are many things
there that could cause noise

sounds like a broven cv shaft have you been hearing a clicking noise when turning this indicates a bad shaft or do you have bad motor mounts this can also cause cv failure

I am not sure if the wheel bearing on the front end is broke. it makes a loud poping noise when turning and the wheel is towed in

Loud popping/grinding most noticeably heard when turning is normally a sign of a bad CV joint. Look under the van where the axle half-shafts come out of the transaxle and connect to the backside of the wheel assembly. Are the rubber boots on the axles torn or missing?
If you hear the popping only in left turns, your right CV joint is bad, If you hear the popping only in right turns, your left CV joint is bad.
