This video is to show how to do a compression test, but it will help with dis-assembly, and shows where all parts are located. The only thing I didn't see, was removal of the center cover above the plugs, ans coils. Kia Sportage 2001 Compression Test Definitely a help for plug, and coil change on 2001 Kia Sportage.
on the very top of your engine should be a small plastic cover (usually has some kind of writing on it to advertise the engine type). This cover is usally held on by about 4 small bolts. remove those bolts and you'll see a series of 4 ignition coils with wire connectors. Disconnect those wire connectors and remove the coils being held in by one 10mm bolt on each coil and remove the coil by pulling firmly straght up. Your spark plugs will be located down in those holes where you removed the ignition coils from. Make sure then engine is cold when you do this. This car has aluminum heads and taking the spark plugs out of a hot engine can strip out the threads in the head.
If oil is on the spark plug tip then it could be from worn valve stems or from worn piston rings. When you accelerate away from the traffic lights and the engine blows a lot of greyish smoke then this is a sign of worn parts. If the oil is leaking into the spark plug hole, then it could be leaking from the tappet cover, either the tappet cover bolts are loose or the tappet cover gasket is faulty.
Allow the car to cool. Disconnect the battery terminal. Remove the right side vent screen top extension. Disconnect the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and brackets.
Disconnect the left hand side coil wires and spark plug wires. Remove the spark plug wires, valve cover bolts and the valve cover. Unplug the electrical connections from the intake manifold runner control actuator. Unfasten the actuator retaining the screws, right bank heated oxygen sensor front and rear.
Remove the heated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Remove the heated oxygen sensor plug and the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor. Disconnect the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and bracket. Remove the valve cover bolts, the valve cover and the old valve cover gasket. Clean the valve cover seating area with automotive engine cleaner and place the new gasket in the gasket seating area.
Replace the parts that were removed and disconnected by reversing the steps. Replace the valve cover gasket and tighten the bolts, in sequence, ensuring not to over tighten. Put back the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and bracket, the heated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, the heated oxygen sensor plug and the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor.
Add oil to the car. Start the car and let it run at idle for a while to check for leaks..
You have a 4 cylinder and there are seals in the cover around the spark plug holes. You can replace these with a rocker arm cover gasket set. Costs about $25.00. The oil does not hurt the sparkplug, but over time it will affect the plug wires/ boots and cause a misfire. these are not hard to replace. Your call.
Try switching the ignition coil with the other coil and plug it in and check for spark again. If it works in the other coil location, then you need an ignition coil. Your engine is bad for valve cover gasket leaks which deteriorate the spark plug wires, so if you are going to put in plugs and wires with the new coil, I would recommend replacing the valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals(included with the valve cover gasket set).
1. Disconnect high-tension code from spark plug.
2. Remove the spark plug.
3. Connect the spark plug to a high tension code.
4. Hold the spark plug with insulated pliers 5~10mm from a ground.
5. Crank the engine and verify that there is a strong blue spark.
If there is no spark, inspect the following points.

Do not attempt any maintenance on spark plug if engine is hot.
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
2. Carefully remove high-tension leads.
3. Use compressed air to blow any dirt or debris from around spark plug hole.
4. Check that spark plug fits squarely in spark plug socket and remove spark plug.
Raise a vehicle and install SST(OK552 131 001) in order to replace cylinder 2, 4, 6 spark plug.
