1983 Nissan 720 pickup with 2.4l fuel gauge not working. What should I check

Halfway down the chassis on the passenger side.

The fuel pump relay is located under the glove box. It is a black box with two relays connected to it. (Of course it is not the pump, rather just a source of some problems sometimes.)

Autozone might have a manual which could be downloaded. I am not certain of their current policy. You might check customer service. This is all the information I have.

I'm not sure if there is a cut off switch for the 720. I was just reading recently about a common problem on them though, being the fuel pump control unit. If your pump isn't working, this may be your culprit. It is located on the passenger side kick panel. Pull the trim off, you should see it. Cost for them is about $60-$70. There may be a way to test them, I don't know.

Is that the engine with two spark plugs per cylinder? There is a good forum site for your pickup at Yahoo Groups. Look for Datsun 720 Pickups (your model is the 720).

fuel and temperature guages on the old nissan cars are run from the same fuse.
i cannot remember which one it is, but if you check your fuses you should be able to see if any are blown. i am pretty sure that there is not a relay for the guages as they do not use enough power to need one.

If the wire broke off close to where it enters the fuel pump body you wont be able to reattach the wire without disassembling the pump body to resolder the broken wire leads inside. I would recommend finding a new universal style replacement pump at a discount auto parts store as I did on an 84 king cab. You may have to mount a bracket and re plumb some new fuel line also.

it is unlikely to be the fuel gauge, look instead to the sending unit. a wire probably is loose or corroded, if you know about how much fuel you should have, then remove the negative cable from the battery and do a ohms test on the sending unit. (low ohms w/ full tank= good, high ohms w/ low fuel= good). DO NOT attempt this with the battery connected as it could FRY your meter or risk fire.
