You can take the battery to most all parts stores and they will check it free . After you replace or charge the battery the same parts store will check charging system . Or you can test charging with a voltmeter on 20 volt scale . Red lead on pos. black on neg. and if it's charging voltage reading should be around 13.1 to 14.1 volts with engine running .

How do you tell if it needs charged or not?

Hi Kelly, A fully charged battery is 12.4 to 12.6. and when the motors running it's 14.3 to 14.6... Three reasons your battery is flat (isn't charging), You have a faulty battery, A power drain or you have a faulty alternator... Clean your battery terminals and If you don't have a multimeter then Try jump starting your flat battery and driving your car for at least ten minutes then turned the motor off and try starting it WITHOUT jump start, If the battery's still flat then it's the battery, If your car starts straight away but won't start the next day then you have a power drain... If you jump start your flat battery and go for a ten minute drive but during that drive the motor dies without turning off the key then it's the alternator....
A mechanic or an auto electrician can usually test Free of charge if you can get it there....CHEERS..

Tried to start, it goes click one time.

It sounds like a faulty alternator, the alternator uses the momentum of the running motor to charge your battery. if this is faulty than the battery will not get charged while running and go flat. use a multimeter to test the battery. or try to jump start the car, if it starts when jump started than you know its an alternator.

Car keeps flatening batterry light and indorcators wont work either

battery may be flat. You can check that with a multimeter.

Next check the alternator. Faulty alternator leads to uncharged battery.

A few weeks it appeared that the battery had went flat with no reason but started with jump leads. Now it won,t turn over and the whole dash flashed as if it had a short. Inside lights and radio are...

Sounds like the battery is completely dead. It's either a faulty battery(go and have it checked) or a dead alternator. To check if the alternator is bad, once the car is started, remove the negative battery cable, if it stays on, then the alternator is good, if it dies immediately, then the alternator is bad and needs replacement.

THE CAR BATTERY FLASHED WHEN I WAS DRIVING.THE CAR THEN STOPPED AND COULD NOT START -RADIO WAS OFF. A RED EXCLAMATION MARK APPEARS ON THE DASHBOARD

SOUND LIKE FAULTY ALTERNATOR. BUT CHECK ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT AND FUSE AND WIRE CONNECTIONS FOR LOOSENESS AND DAMAGE. TURN OFF RADIO BEFORE DISCONNECTING BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE TO KEEP FROM LOCKING OUT RADIO.CHECK ALTERNATOR OUT PUT AT BATTERY SHOULD BE 13.5 TO 14.5 VOLTS. IF NOT ALTERNATOR IS FAULTY.

Car won't start makes a strange noise Car does a very fast ticking noise. May be the altenator?

Firstly:
  1. Have your battery tested,it will have to be fully charged before it can be tested, the ticking sound is usually the sign of a flat/faulty battery.
  2. If battery checks out ok but has gone flat then get the alternator checked to see if it is charging correctly.
Good Luck, let me know how you get on.

Battery warning light coming on after a mile , but battery isnt flat and car starts 1st time and lights are ok Car is puegeot partner combi. Stop car and it and it ok for another mile . Battery doesnt seem...

Check your alternator as it sounds like it may be starting to go. The battery light trips when it detects an issue with the charging system. Very rarely, the battery light can trip if there's an issue with the PCM, but this is very rare.

Take a voltmeter with the car off and measure the voltage on the leads of the batter, should be around 12V+-.2. With the car running, measure again and this time it should read 13V-14V. If it does read 13V-14V then it means that the alternator is working. If it is below 12V, then it means your alternator is not charging the battery properly. If it's above 14V, then it means your alternator is overcharging and damaging the battery.

The alernator does not appear to be charging the battery, the car has not been used for three weeks, battery has been charged but battery light stays on,can this problem be fixed easily?

It sound's like the battery need's to be replaced, the alternator can't be checked without the car started, to check the alternator measure the voltage across the battery, it should read higher than the battery voltage. if the voltage on the battery stay's at 12 volt's with the car started the alternator is bad.
